Gaming on the go: The best mobile gaming apps you need to download

Gaming has taken a profound meaning over the last year as many chose to pass their time in the series of lockdowns playing old & new games. With the effect of COVID-19, game developers also noticed a huge demand for innovative games on the spectrum of handy gaming consoles including mobile smartphones.

Whether it’s good ol’ Candy Crush or the latest fad of Among Us, we’ve experienced some of the best mobile gaming throughout 2020. Kicking off the new year, we hope to see less controversies in the gaming scene and more invigorating games that impact us positively.

With countless games accessible at our fingertips, it can be intimidating (& time-taking) to filter through to find ones you might enjoy without wasting tons of your phone memory. To help with your search, we have compiled our best mobile gaming picks including some 2020 Game Awards’ winners.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

While the incredibly popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons might not be available on the mobile just yet,  Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp gives us a taste of the farm-style social simulation game on our smartphones for free of cost.

Available to download on the Google Play Store & App Store, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is all about being a camp manager and building a campsite for your game-friends & family. You can experience the charm of Animal Crossing without owning a Nintendo Switch with Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.

Mario Kart Tour

Another Nintendo product, the Mario Kart Tour is a classic go-kart style racing game featuring online multiplayer to race your friends & family. While many argue Mario Kart Tour can’t be compared to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch, the free-to-play game seems to be a great solution for casual gamers who don’t want to invest in gaming consoles

At the time of its release, Mario Kart Tour received major flak about its flawed microtransaction system, but it’s still OK if we’re mindful of the gem-buying & purchasing characters from random pipes.

Fortnite

The sensational cross-platform game is everywhere! While the mobile version of Fortnite is nowhere near as proficient as the PC or console versions, it still tops the list of best battle-survival mobile gaming apps. The free-to-play game is available in three distinct game modes: Fortnite: Save the World, Fortnite: Battle Royale, and Fortnite Creative.

In particular, Fortnite: Battle Royale became an enormous success and drew 125 million players in less than a year, becoming a cultural phenomenon.

Hearthstone

Originally subtitled Heroes of Warcraft, Hearthstone is a strategy-based card game inspired by the characters from the World of Warcraft series. The digital-collectible card game is available for free on iOS & Android mobile phones and includes multiplayer. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, Hearthstone is an intricate game that requires in-depth strategizing.

According to the game makers, “[Hearthstone] builds upon the existing lore of the Warcraft series by using the same elements, characters, and relics.”

Among Us

Mobile downloads skyrocketed with Among Us in 2020 as even Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez streamed herself playing this massively successful game.

Featuring cross-platform play, Among Us stole the hearts of many with its innovative social manipulation game setting. The multiplayer game quickly rose in its popularity as it allowed friends & family to connect in a creative manner during a time of social distancing.

Among Us thrived in the sense of its simplistic-yet-engaging approach to gamers & non-gamers alike. With a new map to launch soon, Among Us might be worth the investment if Mafia-style social deduction games are your thing.
