Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just welcomed their newest member to the DLC family, Sephiroth. The dark soldier Sephiroth is from the Playstation world of Final Fantasy 7 and will become the newest DLC member – special abilities, including his super-sized sword, included!

We have all the information about when the angelic villain will join the Nintendo series below. Whether you have a tried-and-true character you like to play or are looking for your new favorite Super Smash Bros. character, we got you covered!

Super Smash Bros.

Created by Nintendo, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch) is the latest iteration of the popular Super Smash Bros. franchise. When the games first launched in 1998, they mainly featured Nintendo characters beating each other up in various Nintendo settings like Hyrule Castle or Mushroom Kingdom, but since then, more characters have joined the fray.

Today, Smash Bros series includes various crossover characters of films, games and TV shows, as well as more recent Nintendo fare like Miis & Animal Crossing villagers. According to Nintendo Life, Super Smash Bros Ultimate now features characters from other developers like Playstation & Capcom.

As Comicsbeat pointed out, in the world of Smash Bros. “things don’t have to make sense”. Super Smash Bros Ultimate thrives on bringing unlikely characters together from different worlds: Mario can battle Solid Snake, or Kirby can swallow Donkey Kong and absorb his powers – or spit him off a ledge.

Better yet, players can beat each other up with item drops, including baseball bats & fans. Want to play as Squirtle and K.O. Ness with a folding fan? You can if you play Super Smash Bros!

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is really living up to its tagline, “everyone is here”, by including tons of characters from top worldwide video gaming platforms. Screenrant reported that Microsoft’s Minecraft’s Steve & Alex, and Playstation’s Persona 5’s Banjo & Kazooie were recently added to the Smash Bros. family as DLC (Downloadable Content) characters.

But now, announced at the Nintendo Game Awards, Super Smash Bros Ultimate has made Playstation’s Final Fantasy 7’s Sephiroth their seventy-eighth DLC fighter.

Who is Sephiroth?

Sephiroth is the one-winged angel fighter in the digital roleplaying video game Final Fantasy 7, a remake of the 1997 Playstation game Final Fantasy VII. Playstation announced the remake Final Fantasy 7 video game in 2015 and sold over 12 million copies worldwide.

CNET reported that the director of Sora Ltd Masahiro Sakurai told players Sephiroth may be “one of the most well-known villains in video games”. Sephiroth will carry all his strengths with him to the Super Smash Bros Ultimate especially his ability to wield the Masamune. The Masamune blade is Sephiroth’s seven-foot sword that only he has the power to wield.

Sephiroth was actually a hero before becoming the villain we know from Final Fantasy 7. Sephiroth is a human-alien hybrid who was born after his mother Lucrecia Crescent was impregnated by an evil alien life form. Sephiroth also made an appearance in the Kingdom Hearts series, helping our hero Sora defeat the Heartless.

In Final Fantasy 7, Sephiroth was the hero of the human army Shinra, until a mission turned the brave fighter into a cold killer. After Sephiroth’s mission to Nibelheim, he discovers his mother is part of an alien experiment, ultimately betrayed by the humans (Shinra) and left to die. Sephiroth burns Nibelheim to the ground and seeks revenge on the entire human army.

How to download Sephiroth

According to CNET the director of Sora Ltd. Masahiro Sakurai debuted Sephiroth to gamers during a livestream December 17th, playing the character in an exclusive demo. Sakurai also reminded players Sephiroth isn’t the first Final Fantasy DLC they can unlock in Smash Bros. –  Sephiroth can also battle his old nemesis from Final Fantasy 7, Cloud Strife, who was already included as a DLC.

For gamers who didn’t get a sneak peak of the character on the December 17th livestream, it’s still on YouTube for your viewing pleasure. Gamers will have the opportunity to download Sephiroth as a DLC early on December 22nd with more passes & features to unlock.

Per Nintendo Life, Sephiroth is available to gamers with a fee of $5.99 during the Sephiroth Challenge, a way for players to unlock the character early. Gamers can also purchase a Fighters Pass Vol.2 for $29.99 to get Sephiroth if they miss the challenge on Tuesday, December 22nd. The challenge is also available to gamers who have pre-ordered the Challenger Pack 8: Sephiroth.

CNET reported, like any other DLC, gamers will need to defeat Sephiroth in order to unlock his DLC character. Once they do this (and we doubt Nintendo will make it easy), gamers will have full access to the character before Wednesday December 23rd. The Sephiroth Challenge will also unlock the Northern Cave with three different difficulties to choose from: easy, hard and very hard.

Sephiroth of Final Fantasy 7 will join Super Mario and the rest of the crossover gang on Wednesday, December 23rd. Let us know in the comments below what you think of the newest member of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team.
