Here’s why Miley Cyrus is all about the FreeBritney movement

With the #FreeBritney movement all over social media, celebrities like Miley Cyrus & Bette Midler have expressed their support for Britney Spears and the singer’s reported fight to end her conservatorship.

According to US Weekly, it all started in 2008 when Britney Spears’s father Jamie Spears took control over his oldest daughter’s career. Jamie Spears not only took charge of the singer’s endorsement deals & tours, but he also had total control over her personal affairs.

Breakdown

The Framing Britney Spears docuseries sheds some light on Britney Spears and how the icon quickly was labelled a nervous wreck after “attacking a paparazzi’s SUV with an umbrella”, confronting her ex-husband Kevin Federline over a custody agreement of their songs, and shaved her head on camera.

The Washington Post reported that in 2007, Britney Spears was “unwell” and her mother Lynne Spears “believed she (Britney) was suffering from postpartum depression” during her divorce & custody battle with Kevin Federline.

Britney Spears continued to act out and was sent for a psychiatric evaluation after an argument with Kevin Federline in 2008. This was the moment Jamie Spears had temporary conservatorship rights over Britney Spears. However, it’s 2021 and Jamie Spears still holds the “temporary conservatorship” over his daughter.

Framing Britney Spears

The Hulu documentary Framing Britney Spears has brought the “Toxic” singer’s private life into the public eye. The show focuses on Spears’s friendships & relationships with her family and exes Justin Timberlake & Kevin Federline.

According to Us Weekly the documentary focuses on what led Britney Spears to her conservatorship and how she has tried to fight to get out from under her father’s control.

Framing Britney Spears also focuses on Britney Spears’s relationship with Justin Timberlake. The documentary presents the “Mirror” singer telling the world about Britney’s infidelity which caused Spears’s reputation to become extremely damaged.

Sky News reported that in August 2020, Britney Spears’s conservatorship case was taken to court. Though most of the proceedings have remained private, Spears’s lawyer stated: “My client has informed me that she (Britney Spears) is afraid of her father. She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career.”

The judge has recently allowed Britney Spears to be the co-conservator to her estate alongside her father. However, Britney Spears reportedly wants full custody of her life and isn’t settling for less.

Father figure

Jamie Spears spoke about the #FreeBritney movement to CNN: “I love my daughter and I miss her very much. . . When a family member needs special care and protection, families need to step us, as I have done for the last twelve-plus years, to safeguard, to protect and continue to love Britney unconditionally.”

Jamie Spears further explained: “I have and will continue to provide unwavering love and fierce protection against those with self-serving interests and those who seek to harm her or my family.”

Support

Thanks to Framing Britney Spears, the #FreeBritney movement trended again on social media. Celebrities worldwide have acknowledged Britney Spears’s conservatorship issue and have shared their support.

Pop star Miley Cyrus used her “Party In the USA” Super Bowl performance on Sunday to support Britney Spears. After singing the lyric “And a Britney song was on”, Cyrus shouted to screaming fans: “We love Britney!”.

Miley Cyrus wasn’t the only celebrity to support the #FreeBritney movement. In fact, Sex and The City’s Sarah Jessica Parker & “Not the Only One” singer Sam Smith also tweeted against Britney Spears’s conservatorship.

Lead singer of Paramore Hayley Williams also expressed her support for Britney Spears as she commented on a headline alleging that Spears was responsible for her breakup with Justin Timberlake. Williams tweeted: “no artist today would have to endure the literal torture that media/society/utter misogynists inflicted upon her.”
