Coming soon: All the 2021 movies you need to see in the first half of the year

It’s pretty safe to assume that, if you experienced the year 2020, you’re ready for it to be over. So, as the New Year approaches, instead of dwelling on 2020’s horrors, rejoice in all the reasons to be excited for the 2021 – including some pretty darn exciting new movie releases.

The Last Duel

Up first is a historical drama directed by Ridley Scott, written by your favorite Boston-due Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and starring Damon, Afflect, Adam Driver, and Jodie Comer. The Last Duel, opening January 8th, follows a pair of friends in 14th-century France forced to fight to the death after one accuses the other of raping his wife.

Based on Scott’s repertoire of action-packed flicks, The Last Duel promises to be adrenaline-pinching. That, paired with Affleck’s writing skills (as exemplified in Good Will Hunting & Gone Baby Gone), moves it right to the top of our watch list.

Cinderella

Coming out on February 5th is a new rendition of Cinderella, directed by Blockers’s Kay Cannon and starring musician Camila Cabello. The fairy tale adaptation will be released in 3D to ensure all of its glory gets to pop out of the screen if you have the nowadays rare chance to see it in theaters.

Nomadland

Another much-awaited 2021 debut is Nomadland by Chinese director Chloé Zhao, starring Frances MacDormand. Nomadland opens on February 19th, following a one-week virtual release on December 4th, 2020. 

Nomadland follows a woman who, after losing everything in the American recession, treks across the American West. After taking home the prestigious Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, the film promises to be one of the best of the year.

Jackass 4

Though there aren’t many details on it yet, a new Jackass is slated to make its release on March 5th. One thing’s for sure: 2021 will give us the gift of watching some hilariously cringeworthy pranks.

No Time To Die

What’s more exciting than a new James Bond movie? Fans of the franchise will be excited to hear the much-awaited No Time To Die is finally getting released April 2nd. 

No Time To Die, directed by True Detective’s Cary Fukanaga and starring Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Rami Malek, Naomie Harris, Lea Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear, Jeffrey Wright, and Ana de Armas (whew, talk about a star-studded cast!) has Bond facing off against a crafty new villain.

A Quiet Place Part II

If you liked A Quiet Place, you’re in luck. The sequel, also directed by John Krasinski, is coming out on April 23rd. A Quiet Place Part II follows the themes of its predecessor, but this time with Evelyn (Emily Blunt) defending her family without Lee (John Krasinski) by her side. 

Black Widow

Black Widow, directed by Cate Shortland and starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz, was slated to come out in 2020, but is now set to come out on May 7th, 2021. The film tells the origin story of Natasha Romanova – a.k.a. Black Widow.  

Godzilla vs. Kong

Another big action blockbuster coming to the big screen in 2021 is Godzilla vs. Kong. The film, directed by Adam Wingard and starring Millie Bobby Brown & Kyle Chandler, opens May 21st, with a simultaneous release on HBO Max. As for the plot? The title is pretty self-explanatory. 

Cruella

Attention fans of 101 Dalmatians: your favorite fur-wearing villain is getting her own feature. Cruella, directed by Alex Timbers & Craig Gillepsie and starring the beloved Emma Stone as Cruella herself, is opening on May 28th. Mark your calendars, but, uh . . . you might wanna leave your dalmation at home for this one.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

For those brave enough to get through the first the Conjuring movies, you’re in luck: 2021 is adding another to the franchise, called The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

In the Heights

Musical theater fan? Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you! In the Heights, based on the book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is set to come out on June 18th in theaters & on HBO Max. The film follows the lives of people in a Latino neighborhood in Washington Heights.  

Though some are worried 2021 will be another disastrous year, we know one thing for sure: we’re in for some pretty killer films. So mark your calendar and prepare yourself for some quality screen time.
