‘Anne with an E’: The best moments between Anne and Gilbert

Oh, Anne and Gilbert. We could revisit the moments between the two over and over again. While any version of Anne Shirley’s story has the relationship between Anne (Amybeth McNulty) and Gilbert Blythe (Lucas Jade Zumann) at the forefront, Anne with an E manages to give it the impact that a love story like this one deserves.

Since we were pouring over our favorite scenes between Anne and Gilbert anyway, we figured we would list out the very best moments between the two. Check out the scenes that fill us with all of the feels!

Gilbert & Anne’s first meeting

Anne with an E: Season 1, Episode 3 “But What is So Headstrong as Youth?”

Gilbert and Anne’s first meeting is absolute perfection, with the only detractor being that Anne doesn’t see Gilbert as the hero he is trying to be.

On the way to school, Billy Andrews (Christian Martyn) confronts Anne and threatens her for the rumors she unintentionally spread about his sister. Right then, Gilbert appears, and quickly diffuses the situation, distracting Billy away from his argument with Anne.

Not properly introduced until later at school, Anne finally realizes that she’s met the Gilbert Blythe she’s heard about. Gilbert, for his part, never sees Anne (or anyone, for that matter) the way the rest of his peers do, and says the best line of the episode, “Why do I care where she’s from? A cute girl is a cute girl.”

Gilbert & Anne’s first connection

Anne with an E: Season 1, Episode 6 “Remorse is the Poison of Life”

Anne and Gilbert give each other some distance after the whole slate smashing incident. It isn’t until Gilbert’s father dies that he and Anne have a real connection.

Even though Anne completely bungles her attempt to console Gilbert, saying exactly the wrong thing, downplaying his situation in comparison to hers, it’s the very first time she tries to approach Gilbert as someone other than her nemesis.

When Anne realizes how poorly she handled her conversation with Gilbert, she tries to make things right by heading to his house, only to find he’s already gone. Heart. Broken.

Anne & Gilbert make the shift to friends

Anne with an E: Season 1, Episode 7 “Wherever You Are is My Home”

Anne unexpectedly runs into Gilbert in Charlottetown as she’s trying to pawn enough items to save Green Gables. Finally able to apologize for her bumbling, poorly worded consolation from their last meeting, Gilbert and Anne finally make the transition to friends. Anne even admits to missing Gilbert in school! This is the moment when everything begins to change between the two of them.

Anne & Gilbert put their differences aside

Anne with an E: Season 2, Episode 10 “The Growing Good of the World”

After a full season with very few moments between Gilbert and Anne, Season 2 ends with them making up and apologizing to one another. Gilbert finally reveals that he plans to remain at school for a little while longer and that college could wait, and Anne tells him she planned to become a teacher after being inspired by Miss Stacy.

Before this heartwarming moment, in the same episode, Cole hints to Anne that Gilbert has a crush on her, and while she pretends the idea is nonsense, it couldn’t help but take root. We are finally left feeling like Gilbert and Anne may fall for each other again!

Anne & Gilbert get their flirt on

Anne with an E: Season 3, Episode 5 “I am Fearless and Therefore Powerful”

There are still sparks! Despite Gilbert’s new fascination with Winifred Rose, we are reminded that there is something extra special between Gilbert and Anne when they bust a move during a dance rehearsal for the upcoming barn dance.

The romantic tension between the two is downright palpable in this scene and we couldn’t be more ready for the two to just forget about everything else and fall into each other’s’ arms right here!

Anne finally realizes she has feelings for Gilbert

Anne with an E: Season 3, Episode 8 “Great and Sudden Change”

There are so many big changes on the horizon in this episode, with Anne and her crew sitting for the Queen’s entrance exam, all of them anticipating their next big step in life.

Gilbert tries to connect with Anne, as he has a path laid out before him that seems perfect except for the missing puzzle piece: his one true love, but his timing is crummy and she is all wrapped up in post-exam bliss.

When the conversation with Gilbert leaves Anne more confused than anything else, she finally comes to the realization that he’s the one, and we feel like we’ve been waiting for her to figure this out forever!

Anne & Gilbert finally, finally, finally kiss!

Anne with an E: Season 3, Episode 10 “The Better Feeling of My Heart”

Thank goodness we finally have made it to this moment. Gilbert ended his engagement to Winnie, there’s a flurry of unread letters, and then Diana takes matters into her own hands and tells Gilbert what was in the letter from Anne he never read.

Everything comes together at once – Gilbert romantically rushes to Anne’s new house, where he gives her the proper goodbye kiss she’s been hoping for, and they finally admit their feelings for one another. Swoon.

  • Enjoyed your summary but the end of season 3 was way too rushed- n o t enough gilbert and anne time. So disappointing to hear season 4 cancelled. If Netflix and CBC bithered to look online at the 100’s and 100’s of of shirts of anne with an e have been done and the literally 1000’s and 1000’s of followers who just keep replaying their favourite excerpts then perhaps the networks might realise just how globally popular Anne with a n E is. Definitely needs to be a season 4 and if netflix and cbc lack the balls to renew it surely there must be some other companies like HBO to take it on? With Moira Walley-Beckett and her team as the scriptwriters,
and of course Amybeth And Lucas as the stars, then AWAE has the capacity to be even bigger than Game of thrones. If AWAE season 4 is not renewed then I surely hope Netflix and CBC ratings suffer.

  • Hey there Bridget! Have you seen that the petition to #renewannewithane is nearly 1M strong? Is there a chance to do a follow up on why @CBC and @Netflix are ignoring the fans?
