Does Chris Watts feel remorse for the murders he committed?
The murders Chris Watts committed have gained audiences’ attention after the Netflix production American Murder: The Family Next Door. Watts’s decision to kill his wife & two daughters has led to his image as a monster without a conscience.
Strangely, Chris Watts has made some claims about his actions, which could make some wonder if he might feel remorseful for murdering his family. Though, these claims don’t prove he actually regrets the killings.
Here are some of the comments Watts has made so you can judge for yourself. Does he regret murdering his wife and children?
Free at last
After being arrested back in 2018, Chris Watts declared he was motivated to kill his family as he wanted to start a new life with Nichol Kessinger, his mistress. Apparently, Watts’s pregnant wife and two kids were in the way of the life he wanted with Kessinger.
At the time, Watts clearly didn’t feel remorseful. The New York Post quoted him saying, “All I could feel was now I was free to be with Nikki. Feelings of my love for her was overcoming me. I felt no remorse.”
Hell on earth
A year after the murders, Chris Watts was starting to feel different about killing his family. According to People, he had the chance to reflect on what he’d done during his time in prison. A source claimed Watts had become more religious, and he had been thinking about his actions as sins.
Watts even wrote a letter to his mother saying he’s a “servant of God.” A source told People Watts thinks about his family everyday and stated, “He realizes that he’s in a hell of his own making, and he has to live with that.”
Religious man
Now that Watts has become a religious man, he is said to keep a Bible with him at all times. Reportedly, he’s haunted by the crimes he committed. Watts also keeps a photograph of his family in his cell, and he talks to it every day.
All these testimonies make it look as if he’s regretting having killed his own family. At the very least, religion made him realize how unethical his actions were. Nevertheless, it may be too much to assume he’s actually remorseful about his own actions.
Life in prison
One of the consequences of American Murder: The Family Next Door was the amount of notoriety it earned for Watts. Even in prison, Watts has become popular since many other prisoners are curious about his crime.
Just like the rest of us outside of prison, other inmates can’t help but feel interested in Watts’s motivation for the murders. However, it might not be easy for his fellow inmates to interact with him, given how he’s locked in his cell throughout the day and is only allowed to go out to exercise & shower.
Besides his new interest in religion, Chris Watts has also found other ways to spend his time in prison. Thanks to the Netflix documentary, many women have taken an interest in Watts and even seem to feel some sort of consideration or sympathy towards him. Watts started to reply to some of his fan mail, which earned him several pen pals.

Although Chris Watts is giving signs of regret over his crimes, it might as well just be that his new ethics are more a product of exposure to religion than of true regret. Either way, Watts’s crimes are truly horrific so his remorse will not be enough to get him out of prison.

Isn’t it amazing how this white man who brutally murdered his pregnant wife and 2 daughters is treated with so much care? This is sickening. Not ONE person in the system treated him badly. I felt like vomitting when the detectives were rubbing his back and shoulders like he’s a wounded animal. BARF. They are all sick.

This is totally sick. I feel like this man was mentally ill and just wanted forgiveness. Seeing how they all treated him was very ridiculously sad and I was disgusted. For the amount damage he’s done with to his family he once had, but now are in heaven. Moral of the story i still don’t think he’s remorseful. Yeah he can call himself a religious man but the background damage he’s done with forever be unforgiving.

I am not sure how familiar you are with investigations/interrogations but you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. It’s quite common while trying to secure a confession/keep an individual from confessing then recanting by giving them a (false) sense of security, like everything will be ok and go away if they just confess, you are on their side through thick and thin. Naturally, all this “compassion” and “care” is gone the second they have something lock, stock and barrel they can use in court as a slam dunk, aka – once they have him by the balls the tables turn. Don’t twist this to fit the narrative you think it should have.

Yes, I completely agree with you. They were being caring and gentle with him to gain his trust in order to get him to keep talking and to find out the truth and to ensure that he didn’t ask for a lawyer or recant his confession. It was a clever and necessary tactic.

If you watch some of the video on YouTube about this murder vs the documentary It’s all about persuasion. I bet when the one detective left the room patting chris’s shoulder he was thinking you SOB! They had to tread lightly until he confessed. I knew In the first 10 minutes he did it as Shannan’s friend was more concerned then he was about her disappearance.

The detective rubbed his back as a tactic to make him feel uncomfortable! Apparently, she later had many showers to forget that she did that! It’s hot nothing to do with being a white nan!

October 15, 2020I totally understand how you feel! It was difficult to watch! Just know that it is a common interrogation technique that is used when the suspect will not relent. Especially a narcissist. They need to feel important and understood and a sense of concern and pity ~ especially from a female ~ is exactly what forced his guard down. Watch the different interrogation on YouTube. It’s pretty crazy. The detective mentioned in interviews that she would have to leave and collect herself from being so angry and disgusted. Could you imagine? Ugh. I could not do that job. I just finished watching the Victim Impact Statements on YT. The hardest fir me was the one from Shannan’s teenage brother. It was heartbreaking. And then listening to Chris’s mother cry and calm Shannan her “beloved daughter in law” …. ugh. If you guys know the story ~ you know that woman treated her “beloved daughter in law” like absolute crap ~ and went out of her way to feed Chris her distain for Shannan. Sickening. smh

Watts is despicable. Period. However, I just went online and looked up “What causes psychopathy?” I thought maybe childhood abuse? I simply cannot – on my own – come up with some REASON someone would do what he did. It’s beyond me…just like having guns like we do in America.
