Everything you need to know about ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’

Who you gonna call? Well, not the classic Ghostbusters or the 2016 version either. (RIP because Kate McKinnon could get it in that movie.) Ghostbusters: Afterlife, slated for release later in 2020, promises a quasi threequel to the 80s classics. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

If you gonna call someone to deal with those ghosts, then these new folks may be your best bet.

The plot

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be a sequel to the first two Ghostbusters films with the first 1984 film being a key part of the plot. Basically, however, the bizarre events of the “Manhattan Crossrip” have faded from the public’s mind and have become something of the urban legend. How an incident where there was a giant marshmallow man and an ancient Sumerian god can fade from the public’s mind, we can’t say.

Single mom Callie moves with her two kids, Trevor and Phoebe, into a creepy old Oklahoman farmhouse after they were evicted belonging to the kids’ late grandfather. When their small town experiences strange earthquakes and other incidents, the kids learn of their connection to the urban legend of the Ghostbuster and their grandfather’s secret legacy.

The grandfather has not been named, but our money is that they’re related to the late Harold Ramis’ character, Egon Spengler.

The cast

Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) will play single mom Callie, who is just trying to keep her family together and above water. Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) will play her son, Trevor, who is something of a gearhead. Mckenna Grace (The Haunting of Hill House) will play her science obsessed daughter, Phoebe. Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) will play Mr. Grooberson, a teacher who was there during the 1984 Manhattan Crossrip.

In addition to the new characters, the old school Ghostbusters will return. Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts are all set to reprise their roles. It’s unknown if Rick Moranis will also return, but given that he’s stepped back from acting in recent years, we think it is unlikely.

Behind-the-scenes talent

Much like how the kids have the legacy of the Ghostbusters hanging over them, then so does the director. Jason Reitman, son of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, directed and co-wrote the script (with Gil Kenan). Ivan Reitman serves as a producer on the film. Longtime collaborator of Jason Reitman, Eric Steelberg will serve as the cinematographer on Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Can we expect Easter Eggs?

Ecto-1 and proton packs will play an important role in the film. Plus is it an Easter Egg when the events of the 80s films play such a hugely important role in Ghostbusters: Afterlife? But, yes, except a lot of Easter Eggs mixed in with the all-important plot points, people. This is sure to delight all of the Ghostbusters fans.

In addition, there will be some new things as well, such as a device that reads psychokinetic energy along with what the original Ghostbusters have been up to in the past 30 years. Add in a dash of Stranger Things-esque wonder and mystery? It should delight old-time fans and a new generation as well.

Well, hopefully.

When will Ghostbusters: Afterlife be released?

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be released on July 10, 2020, in the US. No word currently on international release dates.
