When is the new ‘High Fidelity’ out? Everything we know

Hulu has snagged queen Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) for their new romantic dramedy series High Fidelity. The ten-episode series will premier on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 2020, and could easily become our new plans for the holiday.

A new take on a modern classic

Hulu’s High Fidelity is based on the fantastic 1995 book by Nick Hornby, and the subsequent 2000 movie starring John Cusack and Jack Black. Zoë Kravitz is taking John Cusack’s role of Rob Gordon in a gender swap from the original.

Kravitz not only stars in the updated High Fidelity but is also credited as an executive producer. In her role as Rob, she is a record shop owner who explores her “desert island, all-time, top five most memorable heartbreaks”.

Another swap from the original, Hulu’s High Fidelity takes place in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn — where the novel is set in London and the 2000 movie in Chicago

New cast, same vibe

High Fidelity has always had a “guy movie” vibe, as novelist Nick Hornby is a master of tackling men’s emotions in a relatable and funny way. Both About a Boy and Fever Pitch were also Hornby novels made into movies. 2000’s High Fidelity not only featured peak Cusack and Jack Black performances, but also Tim Robbins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and none other than Zoë Kravitz’s mother, Lisa Bonet.

Based on the trailer, Kravitz seems to keep the same vibe as the original Rob Gordon, a music elitist, and a romantic failure who struggles to understand the opposite sex, especially following the latest breakup.

The original movie had Rob frequently breaking the fourth wall and addressing his audience directly, as Kravitz does in the trailer: “We’ve got a little bit of everything — punk, electronic, hip-hop, rock. To quote our one Yelp review: ‘Decently curated cuts, unpretentious location, owner’s a little rude. Two-and-a-half stars.’”

If you haven’t seen 2000’s High Fidelity, do yourself a favor and sit down with this classic. We have high hopes that Hulu brings some of that magic and a whole lot of that soundtrack.
