‘Honey I Shrunk the Kids’ reboot: Everything to know

One of the most iconic movies from the childhood of many youths is 1989’s Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Starring Rick Moranis as inventor Wayne Szalinski, the film follows as the scientist accidentally shrink both his and the neighbor’s children before throwing them out in the trains. The now tiny children have to get back into the house by traversing the now gigantic (to them) backyard.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids also spawned a sequel: Honey, I Blew Up the Kid (the toddler in the movie got bigger not, you know, blown up) and a straight to video Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.  It also spun-off into a television series and was a popular theme park attraction.

Now a quasi-reboot/sequel to the franchise is in the works over at Disney, here’s everything we know about it.

Quasi-reboot/sequel?

Shrunk, the title of the film, is not a true reboot. The events of the 1989 film are in continuity for it. So it’s more of a sequel than anything else. Shrunk will follow a now-grown Nick Szalinski, who has followed in his father’s, Wayne, footsteps and become a scientist and inventor.

Presumably, shrinking stuff occurs. What is it with this family and size-changing mishaps?

Who’s involved?

Shrunk will star Josh Gad as Nick Szalinski. He also came up with the original story for the film along with Ryan Dixon, Ian Helfer, and Jay Reiss. Todd Rosenberg (All My Life) has signed on to pen the script.

Joe Johnston, who made his feature film directorial debut with the 1989 film, will return to direct Shrunk. Other credits to Johnston are The Rocketeer and Captain America: The First Avenger.

Rick Moranis, who retired from on-camera work in 1997, is also confirmed to reprise his role as Wayne Szalinski in the film. Moranis has become better known as a voice actor, having a role in Brother Bear and The Animated Adventures of Doug & Bob McKenzie.

Where will we see?

Unlike previous rumors, Shrunk will NOT air on Disney+. Deadline confirmed that it will be a theatrical release.

Currently, there is no release date for the project.
