David Bowie’s ‘Labyrinth’ getting a sequel: Everything to know so far

For people of a certain age, Labyrinth is a childhood staple. The Jim Henson film follows Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), a teenage girl who has to rescue her half-brother from Jareth the Goblin King (David Bowie). Labyrinth is full of 1980s whimsy, beautiful sets and puppetry from Jim Henson, and a heaping of nightmare fuel.

When Labyrinth debuted in 1986, it wasn’t as successful as Jim Henson hoped. However, it soon gained a cult following and rumors of a sequel churned over the years. Finally, a sequel to the beloved film has been announced. It’s still in pre-production, but it’s confirmed. Here’s what we know so far.

The Hensons are back

Since Jim Henson sadly passed away in 1990, he won’t be able to direct the sequel. However, his children are at the helm. His daughter, Lisa Henson and his son Brian are producing the Labyrinth sequel. After experiencing how fantastic The Dark Crystal’s prequel turned out, this is exciting!

Scott Derrickson will direct the Labyrinth sequel

Scott Derrickson directed Dr. Strange, so he’s no stranger to strange movies (pun intended). It was announced shortly after he stepped down from directing the Dr. Strange sequel over creative differences. With the cleverness and complex plotting that Dr. Strange brought, we think the Labyrinth sequel will be in good hands.

What about the Goblin King?

Sadly, David Bowie passed away in 2016, so he won’t be able to reprise his famous role. That leaves fans asking: who will take up the crystal balls and become the next Goblin King? Some fans speculate that Bowie’s unofficial doppelganger Tilda Swinton could play him. Others suggest Cody Fern from American Horror Story or Jermaine Clement.

Sequels already exist

Labyrinth sequels already exist as a series of manga. The manga, Return to the Labyrinth, is a four-part series focusing on Toby, Sarah’s baby brother, as he is named the Goblin prince, hand-picked by Jareth to be his successor. While it’s unlikely that the sequel film will follow this book, the plot could similarly follow Toby.

It’s unconfirmed if Jennifer Connelly will reprise her role

While the director, producers, and project are confirmed, it’s unknown if the cast will return. It’s unannounced if Jennifer Connelly will reprise her role as an older Sarah, or if she will even be part of the Labyrinth sequel. Also unconfirmed is if original concept designer Brian Froud will come back to help design new characters and landscapes.
