There’s been a resurgence of sci-fi recently. We have all the latest updates on the fate of the 'Stargate' universe. Find out now.

Here are all the latest updates about the ‘Stargate’ Universe

There’s been a resurgence of sci-fi recently. Now, to many, the big franchises remain Star Trek and Star Wars with all the fandom wars to fill which is “better”. To fans, however, of the late 90s to the early 00s, there is one more beloved franchise to add to the mix: Stargate.

While the Roland Emmerich 1994 film has probably largely faded from the public’s consciousness, the TV franchise that it inspired with such entries like Stargate: SG1 and Stargate: Atlantis remained utterly beloved by fans.

There was an attempt made in 2018 to revitalize the franchise with the prequel series Stargate Origins, but nothing really came of it. (At least not in a majorly appreciable way.) To be fair, however, MGM released the series on the Stargate Command streaming platform, which not many people knew about.

Now, however, there’s been some news courtesy of Roland Emmerich about what’s going on in the franchise.

Are we getting a new series?

Nope. Not for lack of trying on Emmerich’s part though. Emmerich revealed in an interview for his film Midway that any traction that was coming for a revival of the franchise has stopped dead in its tracks.

“Yeah, I kind of talked a little bit with MGM about Stargate. But I think this is going nowhere because there was another TV show, and they kind of realized that if it’s like some sort of a mixed bag.”

And that? That is a bummer. Stargate still has a solid fan community who have an interest in seeing a new iteration of the property. It makes sense for MGM to do something.

So there should be new Stargate content?

Stargate: SG1 is one of the Syfy Channel’s longest-running series and perhaps the best known to come out of the network. Not to mention the equally beloved Stargate: Atlantis, which brings us Jason Momoa pre-Aquaman. It was weird. It was silly. There were great characters and pathos. What more could you want?

With Star Wars and Star Trek determined to go darker, it’s a perfect time for Stargate to reemerge and give us something weird, silly, character driven sci-fi that the show reliably delivered on for years in both of the best-known iterations of the series.

As it streams on Amazon Prime, MGM would probably have an easy time to sweet talk the streaming service into making a new series. This time on a platform that people actually know about.

So yes, there should be more Stargate content. Even if we’re not getting it right now.

  • Before carrying out a new project it is important to analyze why Stargate went from more to less. SG1 has had 10 seasons, SGA 5 seasons and finally, SGU 2 seasons. It would be great a movie to close these great franchises. On the other hand today the series are in fashion, so it would be a great way to end one of the best series about the universe. What do others think?

  • I never watched the other Stargate shows, until recently ;). but I was a SGU viewer when it came out. When they cancelled that show, i thought it was a criminal act. SyFy has cancelled lots of great shows, actually pretty tragic in some cases (caprica, the expanse, etc). I definitely think that this property should be re-explored. I know there is some 90’s camp in SG-1, but the science fiction is top notch. the original stargate movie was super badass, it still holds up. Once i got over the whole area-51 type alien from the movie to being a parasite race change made in the tv series’, I was all good. I honestly think they should just wake up the SGU team from stasis, and continue the ultra high science fiction they were exploring there, before anything else happens. I want to know about the planet builders, WTF?! shit was so awesome. but i aint picky, id take any SG content they throw at me. maybe they should do a “picard”(which is awesome BTW) style “O’Neill”, LOL.

    • Thankfully the expanse has continued on Prime

    • I want to know what happens on stargate universe… they need to wake up !

      • Totally agree, I am still waiting super patiently for a flipping ending to what I thought was the greatest show. I want more than anything for them to wake up out of stasis and continue. But I would be semi satisfied with them doing a new show and just letting us know what happened to them in a passing conversation. Just give us something!!!

  • I just had an idea for a new series after watching SG1 S7E3 “Fragile Balance” where a 15 year old boy claiming to be O’Neill shows up at SG Commamd. Turns out he’s a clone, with all of O’Neill’s memories, and is dying; the result of a genetic experiment gone wrong by the Asgard Loki, who kidnapped the original. Long story short, Thor is arrests Loki and corrects 15 year old O’Neill’s DNA but is unable to correct the age gap. At the end of the episode the Real O’Neill drops of his alter-ego at a high school, the latter claiming he’s given it a lot of thought and likes the idea of going back to high school knowing what he knows now. As teenage girls eye the younger O’Neill, the older understands his reasoning. The younger also says that the air-force has him set up, so the elder shouldn’t worry, besides it would be “weird” to keep in contact.

Anyways new series: that episode took place in 2003. If MGM started a new series now, you could have the Clone O’Neill 17+ years later taking his place in Stargate Command now as a twice over accomplished Air-force Pilot. I think it would be an interesting plot point and a way to keep the original characters.

    • Awesome idea. Always thought they should’ve done more with the clone O’Neill.

  • Soy fan de las tres series pero en particular me gustaría que una película cerrará de forma espectacular la trilogia de ellas. SGU nesecita un final .

    May 6, 2020
  • I mean I Am no expert but I think with what’s going on in the actual science stuff now and the tech available a brand new stargate program would be great with some of the original cast and introduce some newer younger actors

    May 7, 2020
  • Indeed omar is right

    May 7, 2020
  • All these years later and i still say the bastards that were responsible for the cancelling of SGU should be put before a firing squad

    May 9, 2020
  • I think MGM should let people passionate about the franchise come up with something new, what were they thinking with Stargate: Origins? Who greenlit that show? A prequel that shows everything that happened before anything interesting happened? Of course no one cared.

The fans, and I mean, ALL the fans past and present would jump on a new great SG show! Especially if the franchise doesn’t go the route of Star Wars and Star Trek where they ruined both franchises basically. We would absolutely jump on the opportunity to love a new SG show!

    May 11, 2020
    • Totally agree!

  • I would like to see the end of SG Universe. The concept that might me another higher intelligent race that created the universe seems fascinated to me. There is so mystery behind it that makes you feel addicted.

As for ratings, TV shows always struggle to find a perfect time for viewers to watch their shows. Honestly, not everyone will be committed to watch on a weekly basis, but on their own time. Streaming is a viable long term option, and franchises such as SG can flourish. MGM just needs to get out of it’s comfort zone.

  • I would absolutely LOVE to see a series pick up with Destiny crew coming out of stasis. It sucks to never find out what happened to the crew. Stargate is so awesome, and with the special effects of 2020, a new series could be really awesome. They are losing a great opportunity if they do not capitalize on all the years of TV Stargate was around.

    May 27, 2020
  • Even if it was totally new series but with some popular actors from the ones before, I would totally eat that sh**.

    June 11, 2020
  • Stargate, Dark matter The Expanse to name a few of the TV I watch. No SY-FI now to watch the same ones over, over over and over… Get the idea nothing to watch!!!!

    July 12, 2020
  • Maybe if the fans started a petition like they’ve done with other shows, they can get a reboot or continuation of the SG franchise. Such as the SG Universe that left us hanging presumably of course with Eli surviving. It’s worked in the past. You never know until you try.

    July 13, 2020
  • I don’t understand how fashionable it was to close such a serial ??? Blow up sy-fy for such a decision. I have already reviewed all the SG series several times.

    July 27, 2020
  • I’d love to see stargate universe come back. And to make a long story short. Have the crew wake up have the crew fight more bad guys and finally they reach the center of galaxy and find out there are thousands of a thousand ,thousand stargates and one leads back to earth.. But they have only one choice to make it to the right one.Of course more than a choice they have to pay some sort of plot twisting sacrafice. That’s all I have so far. Can’t wait for that

  • I really miss Stargate in any form! Please bring back Stargate! If it is with an older clone of Colonel O’Neill or if that ends up finishing universe. It doesn’t matter please bring it back! We are in dire need of some good science-fiction series!

  • The short lived TV show of “Stargate Universe” was due to the timing it came out. Around the time that SGU was introduced to us in 2009, NBCUnversal, (the parent company to the Sci-Fi channel), started to re-brand the Sci-Fi channel with a name change. In July 2009, they changed the name from Sci-Fi to SyFy . Then, in early 2010, NBCUniversal was purchased by Comcast. With a new CEO in place, they decided to change the prime time lineup with Reality TV shows. They did this to bring in a younger audience and to compete with other Cable TV stations. With an increase of a younger audience wanting More Reality TV shows, a slow death started to happen to all ‘real sci-fi tv shows’ on the SyFy channel.
I for one, personally think SGU was given the death sentence because of this.

  • Just finished SGU on “Prime” with the same thoughts as when I saw the final show in its original airing…WHAT? Eli has to take the hit for Rush??? But why isn’t Eli trying to fix the last stasis chamber? Why is Eli just gazing out at space? And did I really see a sly grin on his face? Maybe he kills Rush and uses that pod to survive. The pods looked roomy, couldn’t 2 people fit in one? Oh well. Please finish SGU!!!

  • They should combine all three in one massive movie. Wait! I know what you are thinking…Here me out. Do a pre- series movie launch pilot. A 3 episode movie pilot. I think it would be best to launch it through Amazon. I think it would get the best viewership status through Amazon. But of how it should go…I leave that up to the writers. I think if the pilot does good, if not great go ahead with a actual full on series. I guarantee it will be the most viewed, top rated pilot/launch/mini-series of the year. I recommend doing it as of 2021. Why? Because of CV-19 the movie industry and box office took a massive hit. Streaming is where it’s at! Plus it’s Stargate we’re talking about here. I think that 2021 would be the year to do it. I know there’s thousands of other fans who’d agree! The time has to be sooner than later. Plus to top it off they’d make a ton of money for the franchise as well set up plenty of cash to move forward with the series on bluray and in app purchases from the pilot alone.
