Kiss 2020 goodbye: Relive the good, bad, and ugly trends from this year

2020 is a year that will always be remembered as a gloomy chapter in human history. We were stuck inside thanks to COVID, wildfires ravaged the West Coast, political demonstrations & unrest ravaged everywhere, and the world seemed to go to heck in a handbasket.

Of course, that didn’t mean there weren’t good things about this year. As this challenging year draws to a close, let’s relive all the good, bad, and ugly trends that took our minds off the cesspool of negativity and made this year bearable.

Baking banana bread

Don’t say you didn’t go bananas over banana bread this year! Amidst the widespread adoption of social distancing protocols, people were locked up in their homes, and trying new banana bread recipes became all the rage.

From April through May, our collective social media feeds were overflowing with people’s latest endeavor at whipping up the best banana bread confection. Can’t say we are surprised by this trend. Banana bread is easy to make, sounds healthy, and tastes heavenly!

Tiger King

It happened at the start of the quarantine when you were trying to grapple with the new reality. You blinked, and all of a sudden, every family member & friend is pouncing on this bizarre trend and messaging you to check out the whacky Netflix documentary Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.

While the madness of the docuseries offered a much-needed reprieve from the quarantine blues, we’re not sure why the Tiger King series is still lingering on our timeline like a guest long past their welcome.

The Queen’s Gambit

If not Tiger King, then what was our hottest self-isolation binge-watch, you ask? Queen’s Gambit, Netflix’s biggest original miniseries to exist to date. The intriguing story of a young orphan girl’s foray into the male-dominated world of chess while struggling with drug & alcohol dependency is awe-inspiring, to say the least.

TikTok dances

Playful choreography paired with catchy snippets, the TikTok dance trends this year got everyone off the couch to get their groove on.

Apparently unwavering in its prevalence, TikTok dance trends took over this year too. This time, even celebrities joined in on the trend with their own renditions.

From Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” to Taylor Swift’s early 2000s smash hit “Love Story” to Cardi B’s latest “WAP”, all the songs received their own signature moves that were practiced all over the world.

Listening to BTS

Raise your hand if you listened to BTS’s “Dynamite” on repeat this year.

As Time Magazine rightly remarked, 2020 was BTS’s year. The group reached the zenith of popularity this year because of their trending chartbusters. The seven-membered K-pop act smashed international records, inspired a whole new legion of stans, and went on to become possibly the biggest band in the world.

Donning the tie-dye look

T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, jeans, masks, you name it, the internet tie-dyed it.

Tie-dye outfits popped up all over the place this year, though we’re not sure why. Perhaps the vibrant colors or the eye-catching patterns added some cheer to our dreary year. Or maybe we were just bored in the house and needed something to do. Either way, tie-dye fashion has become the accepted du jour quarantine look.

Video-chatting through Zoom

As working from home became the new normal, your sweat pants became your new work apparel, and Zoom became the new standout star. But the video chatting app’s usage wasn’t limited to just professional settings, it also transcended into our personal lives. Whether it’s a catch-up call with family or a virtual dinner with your date or a happy hour with your besties, Zoom dominated our lives this year.

Playing Among Us

Now, if you’re like the next person, then you spent this year playing the surprisingly addictive video game, Among Us

Among Us reigned the video gaming sphere this year and flooded our social media feeds with memes & clips of the lively colorful blobs running around accusing each other of murder. The murder mystery video game dropped in the summer of 2018 but only became a trend in 2020 after high-profile influencers started taking interest in the game.

What do you think of these 2020 trends? Did we miss out on any? Let us know in the comments!
