Everything you need to know about ‘Peaky Blinders’ S5

Peaky Blinders is coming back for at least two more seasons and that’s just a fact! Some other facts about the show include that there will be a new director, filming begins in August this year, and it won’t be on until next year. But what else do we know?

Well, the show’s creator – Steven Knight (Locke) – explained a little more about what direction this season will be taking. “We are going into the 30s now. There is so much stuff happening, so why not finish the job? The depression and the rise of fascism form part of the story line. It is setting those things up. In the 30s across Europe and Britain there was the rise of fascism.”

Knight also dodged questions as to whether Alfie Solomon is really dead and about the shooting of Grace. (He simply answered, “Pass” and “I’m not going to answer that.” So he was a lot like you taking a physics exam in high school.)

Politics will also be playing more of a part in the next season, as Paul Anderson (Legend) who plays Arthur Shelby noted, “Arthur’s not gonna be a politician. He’s got political ties now, let’s put it that way. But you won’t see him at no rallies or in Parliament.

“What it gives Arthur and his family is more power. Tommy is in a position of power, and he can only get stronger in that position. So we’ll all have more cover, we’ll have more opportunity, and more protection. And by protection I mean by society and the police and so on. We’ll be able to get away with things under the guise of, ‘we’re politicians, we’re respectable.’”

Who’s the new director?

Anthony Byrne is set to be the show’s director for all six episodes of the new season. Byrne previously directed ITV’s three-part drama titled Butterfly as well as directing and co-writing In Darkness with Game of Thrones’s Natalie Dormer.

When will it air?

Sadly, you won’t be getting any kind of new Peaky Blinders fix until next year at the earliest, but with the news there will be at least two more seasons, at least you know there will be more from the Brummie gangsters in the years to come.
