A coming of rage story: Everything we know so far about ‘Insatiable’
On Tuesday, Netflix dropped the first trailer for its new show Insatiable and it looks like a violent burst of sweet TV treats with a nasty sour edge to it. Following a young woman who emerges from the weight of her youth ready for payback against the people who bullied, ignored, and underestimated her due to her size, Insatiable is described as a “coming of rage story” and it sounds like a campy delight. On her mission for revenge, the young woman seeks help from a pageant coach and his social climbing wife – neither of whom seem to understand how far their client will go to exact her revenge.
While there still isn’t a great wealth of information available concerning the Netflix Originals show, we do know some important deets that you’ll definitely want the lowdown on. Watch the first trailer for the show above and then read on to find out everything we know so far about Insatiable.
It comes from an interesting team
Created by Lauren Gussis (Dexter) and executive produced by Ryan Seacrest, Insatiable also boasts a stellar cast that includes young star Debby Ryan (Rip Tide) in the lead role as a vengeful young woman out for payback, Dallas Roberts (Dallas Buyers Club) as a disgraced attorney turned pageant coach roped in to help her, and Alyssa Milano (Charmed) as his wife. The Craft director Andrew Fleming is directing a few episodes, which makes us want to call upon the power of Manon to hustle some snacks over here pronto, ready for this surefire treat of a show.
It follows a young, hideous antihero (who you’ll definitely still root for)
According to Cosmopolitan, the show wastes little time in establishing Patty as an antihero, with a first episode that includes the character punching a homeless man in the face, an inappropriate crush on an older man accused of molesting teenagers (Roberts), a murder plot, and even the use of a pink shotgun. Ryan told the magazine about the dark choices of her character: “Everyone who does bad things has, in their mind, a perfectly logical and justifiable explanation for it . . . This is a story of a girl who has just achieved what she thought would be the jumpstart of her life, and now realizes that she spent a lot of her identity waiting for this moment and doesn’t know who she is.”
Insatiable will be campy fun, but it will also deal with real issues
In the same interview, Ryan described the show as being an “incredibly inclusive and well-rounded and aware” comedy, despite how dark it may be, and suggested that Insatiable deals with issues that many young people are currently dealing with. “Everything that I’ve done through and gotten therapy for and talked with my friends about, every kind of trauma and confusion and illness and strange reckoning in my life and the life of my loved ones, are dealt with on this show. Comedy is a really important way for us to be able to talk about the things that are already very present.”
The show is inspired by a real person
According to Deadline, attorney turned pageant coach Bob is based on real-life lawyer and beauty pageant coach Bill Alverson. If you watch a lot of trash TV, you may already be aware of Alverson from the short-lived TLC reality show Coach Charming, which delved into his strange dual-pronged career.
According to a profile on Alverson by The New York Times, the coach is renowned for being outspoken and brutally honest with his clients, including once telling a 10-year-old girl with dreams of becoming a baker, “That’s fine, because you’re not a chunker. If you had a weight problem, I’d say you have to lay off all the croissants,” and telling a woman vying to be Miss Mississippi, “You have got to lose the ebonics!” Yikes.
Insatiable will be dropping on Netflix in no time at all
