Save ‘Whiskey Cavalier’: The fans on their fight for season two
We’ve been fighting alongside the Friskeyheads’ fight for season 2 of Whiskey Cavalier ever since season 1 concluded. The crime dramedy on ABC follows FBI agent Will Chase (codename Whiskey Cavalier) and his CIA partner Frankie Trowbridge (codename Fiery Tribute) as they build a team to fight against any possible spy threat. Fans have spoken out against the show’s cancellation.
The Friskeyheads put up a long fight for Whiskey Cavalier, continuing to tweet and show support for the show every way they can. We know a thing or two about fandoms refusing to let their show die, rewatching it every chance they get. Through the negative, the fans have leaned on each other and have become a family in the process.
Whether it’s teaming up together to raise money for charity, group rewatches of the first season, or supporting each others’ fanart/fanfiction, the Friskeyhead fam has each others’ backs. As they continue to fight, we spoke to some more members of the fandom about why they became Friskyheads and why they want to #SaveWhiskeyCavalier.

When did you start watching Whiskey Cavalier?
Since the pilot episode.
What drew you to the show?
I am a huge fan of Lauren Cohan, and when I first found out this was going to be the new project she was working on, I knew I would be watching. When I was finally about to watch the official show trailer I was hooked automatically; everything about it just looked so different in a unique way and I couldn’t wait for the show to premiere in the fall.
I wasn’t too familiar with the rest of the cast besides Tyler James Williams since himself and Lauren were already co-stars on The Walking Dead. I could not wait to see what kind of connection they would bring to Whiskey Cavalier while working together again!
Although after the first episode I was already in love with the entire cast, they all fit their characters perfectly it was like it was meant to be.
What about the show makes it so special?
I think what made the show so special was how it was role reversal. Instead of having a sensitive female and strong male they switched it up which is something you almost never see in TV these days.
Both Lauren and Scott played their characters so well, seeing how Scott could portray the more shall we say, sensitive male and Lauren who we already knew could be an extreme badass, especially after seeing her previously on The Walking Dead and her latest movie Mile 22, they both made the storyline incredible to follow.
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
It was frustrating how a show with so much potential and such a unique storyline and plot could get cancelled. I do personally believe that if they had put the show in a better time slot other than 10pm, which for someone like myself who works at 7am struggled to stay up and watch, I think it would of had a way better success rate.
Personally I believe there was a mistake made by the network by not renewing this show, it’s been weeks since it was cancelled and people are currently only just catching up, seeing the show for the first time or finishing the series and finding out that it has been cancelled.
How did the show get you through dark times?
This show helped me realize that girls can really be that badass. Lauren’s character taught me that it’s ok to be different, strong and unique, that yes, somebody will love you for who you are.

Using hashtags, live tweeting, tweeting at networks, requesting other networks to pick up the show and streaming services, and encouraged more people to watch the series
Do you have anything else to add?
Whiskey Cavalier should have been renewed! The network will regret it eventually if not already, it’s a shame that this amazing series only lasted us a couple months, but it was the best couple of months I could have asked for. For now I hope eventually we will be able to continue this story.. I mean hey what other shows get cancelled twice? There definitely was an impact made.

What drew you to the show?
Numerous commercials promoting the show for several weeks before the premiere, primarily while watching The Bachelor.
What about the show makes it so special?
Whiskey Cavalier offers a unique blend of perfectly crafted characters that are extremely charismatic and the chemistry is outstanding. Scott Foley’s character, Will Chase, is the sensitive guy and Lauren Cohan’s character, Frankie Trowbridge, is tough as nails.
But, slowly but surely, they warm up to each other. What’s fantastic is the flipping of gender stereotypes and pushing Will’s sensitivity to the max. The result is comedy gold. This level of romantic comedy is delightfully playful and the way it’s interwoven with the spy missions is what hooked me from the beginning.
But, it’s not just Will and Frankie. The whole team is great and you care what happens to all of them. Susan is rock-solid and loyal. Standish is endearing. Jai is stand-offish, but becomes a welcome friend. For the creator, David Hemingson, and the writers to be able to craft characters that become beloved to 3 million viewers a week in such a short time is something truly worthy of respect.
The cinematography and the beautiful European locations are absolutely stunning, making each episode a lot like watching a mini-Bond movie.The music is excellent. Everything comes together in such a tightly-woven package of art that the fantastic action scenes are almost secondary! It’s just a really fun show!
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
It was extremely disappointing that the ratings placed the show on the bubble. I understand that Whiskey Cavalier was still on the fall schedule even on May 11, 2019. However, NBC passed on Emergence and, since this show was produced in-house at ABC, they bumped Whiskey Cavalier off the schedule and forced the cancellation.
On Thursday, May 23, 2019, Michael Ausiello reported that ABC’s Karey Burke was taking another look at Whiskey Cavalier (due to a ratings bump and out of respect for the producers).
Sadly, the following day, Whiskey Cavalier was declared 100% dead. As with the case of many of the shows on which you’ve reported, delayed and on-demand viewing is simply not given more than a passing consideration as the much-coveted, yet elusive live viewing is considered the gold standard for decision-makers.
Personally, I’ve been very frustrated to hear both ABC and Warner Bros TV talking about how the show was so amazing, how the decision to cancel was so tough, and how they are looking for a new home for the show, only for all concerned not to be able to find it a home for season 2. Granted, the sticking point for a renewal appeared to be that WB was not willing to compromise on the licensing fees.
However, if this is the case, than why can’t WB pick up production and distribute it in-house via TBS, TNT, or via HBO Max? For fans to be given the impression that ABC is the only network or streaming service on the entire planet that can afford to take a chance on Whiskey Cavalier, given it’s (so far) less-than-stellar ratings seems preposterous and hard for fans to accept.
Especially when we see the multi-billion content budgets at networks and streaming services. There should be a place for a show this good!
Have you made friends in the fandom?
Absolutely! I didn’t join a fandom until the show was cancelled. But, after that, I’ve found that being an admin has given me a voice to champion the show.
How did the fandom support you in times of need?
I find that, whenever news comes out about something that is disappointing, everyone rallies around to pump everyone else up. There’s always a couple of naysayers in every group. But, most people are very positive and helpful.
What lengths have you gone to to save Whiskey Cavalier?
This is a good question! I’ve written letters to executives at ABC and WB. I’ve sent shot glasses to media execs. I’ve emailed countless execs at possible new homes for Whiskey, not only in the U.S., but in Canada. We’ve conducted a fundraiser to send gift baskets to The Walt Disney Company.
We’ve reached out to the media to help raise awareness of the show, on both a local and national level. I’ve visited the offices of WarnerMedia in Burbank to find contact information for our continuing campaign to save the show. I’ve posted on Facebook, conducted tweet sessions to help Whiskey trend on Twitter to raise the profile, and posted on Instagram.
I’ve called and submitted requests online for networks and streaming services to pick up the show. I’ve even been very blessed and fortunate to have the creator of the show become a part of our Facebook group to interact with our members.
What lengths will you go to save Whiskey Cavalier?
We realize that we currently do not have enough traction with enough fans to move the mountains needed to have a new network or streaming service take a chance on the show. The producer, David Hemingson, contacted us to let us know that, sadly, they have tried to find a new home for the show, but the show cannot return. This has been very difficult for me as I do not like to quit.
However, the cost of the show vs the linear ratings appear to be a huge stumbling block for a season 2 pickup. Although Whiskey is excellent and has received much acclaim, we’ve found that no new home will take a risk on a show that only has 13 episodes and which aired over only three months.
Although, there is tremendous fan support given the short on-air lifespan of Whiskey, our new goal is to simply try to find a new home for season one and to increase the number of viewers and fans for a possible long term miracle.

How has your fandom helped support that charity?
We currently have a fundraiser dedicated to honor Scott Foley and the memory of his Mom.
Do you have anything else to add?
Whiskey Cavalier is a show that, in only 13 episodes, has captured the imaginations of so many people.
In a world where there are so many shows and so many platforms, if feels like a terrible injustice that the beautiful and creative talents of the cast and crew would seemingly be tossed aside, merely because ABC and WB would not compromise even a little bit in order to keep this show alive. And, who suffers? It’s not just the fans who did not get resolution to the half-dozen cliffhangers.
It’s also the creative talents of the cast and crew who aren’t able to continue the wonderful stories of these amazing characters we were just beginning to love. It seems very short-sighted that ABC could not pick up Whiskey Cavalier for mid-season, especially since it was widely reported there were still slots available.
What chance does a freshman show have if it needs to hit a ratings grand slam within its first 4-6 weeks, especially when it’s put up against competition with a 6 season head start?
There has to be a better way! Perhaps your campaign to have media execs also take delayed viewing into consideration is something we should shoot for.

When did you start watching Whiskey Cavalier?
The night it premiered on ABC.
What drew you to the show?
The initial ads leading up to the premiere, also having seen lead actors Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan in other shows.
What about the show makes it so special?
It is action packed yet funny at the same time and the entire cast gels so well together that you can care about all of them. It carries a serious tone to make the show more believable and grounded, but has enough comedy to lighten it up just enough without seeming hokey.
As I’ve said before, I don’t think another cast and crew could pull it off so perfectly. Most importantly for me, for that 13 week run I had a guaranteed time where I could forget about all my problems and just enjoy being immersed into the world of the show.
No other television show has been able to pull me out of my depression consistently and I can’t give you the exact reason why. I think it’s just the perfect storm of storytelling and characters by an amazing cast and crew.
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
ABC decided to cancel the show before the final two episodes had even aired, and during those final episodes the live viewership doubled and yet they stayed with their original decision despite what I consider a half hearted “reconsideration” which only lasted about half a day before they doubled down on the cancellation.

On Twitter while working to try and save the show and via the Facebook group Whiskey Cavalier Fandom which has been organizing social media events to save the show.
How did the show get you through dark times?
I’ll be candid here, I suffer from depression and anxiety. I take medication for both but I still have my rough days. When I would watch or talk about Whiskey Cavalier all of that went to the back of my mind even for just a little while and that’s important.
While I have certainly enjoyed other shows, none of them put me in a better frame of mind then Whiskey Cavalier. That may seem like hyperbole but the camaraderie of the characters on the show made me see that even in difficult times people can be there for each other.
How did the fandom support you in times of need?
We all kind of kept each other’s spirits up both while fighting for the show after the cancellation and more recently trying to keep the show in the spotlight and not let people forget about it. We are currently doing weekly watch parties to keep everyone in a better mood while fighting for the future of the show.
Have you ever read fan fiction from members of the fandom?
Yes I read several daily, it keeps me from being too upset to continue to fight to save the show.
What’s your favorite piece of fan fiction that you have read from the fandom?
There are a lot but if I have to pick one, it’s Three Seconds.
What lengths have you gone to to save Whiskey Cavalier?
Petitions, letter writing and fundraisers to executives at ABC, Warner Bros., and anyone else we could think of to try and save the show. A whole lot of tweets and Facebook group work. Phone calls to various places that could pick up the show.
What lengths will you go to save Whiskey Cavalier?
I’ll keep tweeting, as well as donating to campaigns to get executives attention. I will do whatever it takes to keep the spirit of the show alive until somebody realizes the potential of it and brings it back.
Is there a charity that your fandom is supporting? Which one?
The Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance and FirstBook.
How has your fandom helped support that charity?
Those two charities are personal to Scott Foley (ORCA because of the death of his mother at a young age) and Lauren Cohen (FirstBook because it was a charity her grandfather supported). We donated funds from campaigns that didn’t quite reach their goal.

When did you start watching Whiskey Cavalier?
April. I started watching it late and had to catch up.
What drew you to the show?
My husband saw the show and suggested it to me. He thought it would be something I would like. The pilot was amazing and I was instantly hooked. I love the Bourne movies. It felt like that but just with humor added.
What about the show makes it so special?
I love the scenes in Europe. The locations feel so real and it is like watching a mini Bourne movie. The emotional side of the male character and the tough side of the female character. Also, something about the show makes you fall in love with all the characters immediately. I can’t really explain why it is so wonderful.
It has an energy and a synergy about it. It was like love at first sight, except with a TV show. I felt like the minute I watched it, I had watched these characters for years.
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
The most frustrating thing seems to be the lack of investment in the show. It’s like they cancel shows and forget that there are viewers attached to the show. It just seems like their only criteria is if the show is suddenly, immediately, a huge hit. That is totally unrealistic.
Take myself for example. I came into watching it near the end. I came in maybe 9 episodes in and there are 13 episodes. I fell in love with it. Then, I told my brother about it and they binge watched all the episodes too.
ABC saved it till last to cancel and seemed to be renewing it until suddenly a different show was available (Emergence), and then they dropped Whiskey Cavalier. They then took a second look after fan outcry and canceled it again. So, the most frustrating thing, is how little they seem to care about the viewer and how little they are keeping up with the times in terms of how people view things.
How did the show get you through dark times?
I work really hard with deaf-blind children. I have a tough job. I also feel the politics of our time is wearing and painful. The show helped me to let that all go and feel like I was in Europe running around with some spies and just having a lot of fun. It was a huge stress reliever.
How did the fandom support you in times of need?
By honoring how it felt to lose the show. Understanding that it is a real loss. The fandom also helped me feel like I wasn’t alone in suddenly wanting to save a show, which I have never done before. Also, fans helped me hang in there when I wanted to give up. Also, it is wonderful to have someone who loves the show the same as me.

I opened a Twitter account for the first time in my life. Never was on Twitter before. Worked on Twitter campaigns to get our hashtag trending, including spending hours doing so, to the point that my family thought I was nuts.
Being an admin on Facebook and losing sleep working on the page, spending hours deciding what should happen next.
Is there a charity that your fandom is supporting? Which one?
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and two others.
Do you have anything else to add?
I want Whiskey Cavalier back. Why can’t these networks understand that ratings alone do not tell the story in this modern era?. And, why can’t networks understand that shows need a little time? Investing so little time in a show with critical acclaim and a fan base just makes viewers feel like an afterthought.
You would think they would want to put out quality programming, and be willing to spend the time to grow the show. These networks are driving away the very viewers they hope to draw in. You can’t keep burning your viewers. It just makes it harder to draw them in.
I won’t ever trust ABC again. They broke my heart twice – first and second cancellation of my favorite show. I might not ever try again.

What drew you to the show?
The only time ABC promoted the show was for the first episode. The previews were fantastic, then the show was so much better than the preview for the first episode.
What about the show makes it so special?
Honestly, have never seen such a great ensemble, sometimes you like a few characters. You were invested with every character. Still find myself rewatching all the episodes since Whiskey Cavalier was by far the best show on TV. This is the only time I have ever purchased a series.
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
ABC/Disney cancelled Whiskey Cavalier so the board of directors could make more money by bringing on a canceled show from another network that they owned. Also the way the show runner just gave up; what made them walk away without a fight? The ratings were growing weekly, they didn’t look at how many people watched the show later on an app or those that DVD’d Whiskey Cavalier so they could watch it later.
What lengths have you gone to to save Whiskey Cavalier?
Donated money for the plane, trying to tweet as much as possible regarding the show. Sending letters to WB and looking for the correct people to contact.
Do you have anything else to add?
This show has tremendous staying power for years to come. We were just getting to know the characters with endless story lines. In the last episode, the main set was shot up so no one would question a new location.
The audience was growing and Whiskey Cavalier has a huge fan base. I have never seen another show where the fans buy a billboard in Times Square to save the show. Praying that HBO Max, WB’s new streaming service decide that Whiskey Cavalier needs to be in their network! Miracles do happen!

What drew you to the show?
I wanted to see just a “FUN” well produced network series again. I liked the talents on screen. And like Bill Lawrence’s track record with the shows he’s produced.
What about the show makes it so special?
The action, the balance of comedy and drama, the chemistry. Great ensemble piece. One of the best on network tv in decades. That balances each other.
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
ABC felt like it was rushing to cancel it. The final two episodes had a DVR viewership of a +175 increase. They didn’t rerun episodes like they did with The Rookie… A show that is paint by numbers. Not knocking them. But it’s not interesting. Yet, it got renewed. And reruns play. The show was still finding its audience. Plenty of people are starting to find out about the show.

How did the show get you through dark times?
I don’t think there should be a denial that in America 2019, times are pretty dark and tough. For some strange reason, the trend in American Television these days are either apocalyptic shows, good people turning into bad, and people actually liking it.
So when Whiskey came on, I was just relieved to see people you liked, with great chemistry, camaraderie,saving the world from bad guys every week. They are like the friends you wished you had in real life, but a whole lot cooler.

One of my joke answers – although I’m serious – is try to audition for the Press Your Luck reboot, which is ironically on ABC too. They have a bonus round where the contestant gets to have a personalize a “prize.” My prize would be another season of Whiskey Cavalier.

Curiosity; I loved the trailer as it was both adventure and humor.
What about the show makes it so special?
As pre-mentioned, adventure and humor, a very light show to watch, the scenery and also left you light hearted and loved the feeling. Most shows these days are either fantasy, too serious, scientific or reality. This one stood out as it had a variety of everything!!!
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
It didn’t have an ending! It was left on a cliffhanger! Not being able to see the actors again that made an awesome group to watch as they all were different and humorous in their own way, their connection was amazing and the actual way the show made me feel after I used to watch it!

I do think we have all connected in a way, as we have become fanatic with the show and are trying to put on a fight!
How did the fandom support you in times of need?
We all support each other and still do. Twitter and Facebook have been amazing. l don’t follow Instagram or use it as much, but we do try our best to flood Twitter with outcomes. Some of us getting warnings or accounts banned and opening new ones for over tweeting or getting “too” frustrated.

What drew you to the show?
I saw an advertisement for the show on the CTV channel. I recognized Lauren Cohan from her role as Rose on The Vampire Diaries and decided to give the show a chance.
What about the show makes it so special?
Whiskey Cavalier was brilliantly written and was a true gem in the midst of all the reality TV and other garbage that winds up on our TVs. I loved the entire cast which I also think is really rare to find. Whiskey Cavalier was just really unique and could always take my stress away.
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
The show was cancelled on Mother’s Day. Then a little while later we got word from the show runner that ABC was reconsidering the cancellation because of the ruckus that we made online. Then the Friskeyheads fought like hell only to have our hearts crushed when the show was cancelled for the second time the day after the season one finale. ABC has no intention of reversing their decision, they just played us.

I’ve had the privilege of talking to other FriskeyHeads online about the cancellation. It was nice to know I wasn’t the only one upset about it.
How did the show get you through dark times?
I am a generally very anxious person. I’d put on Whiskey Cavalier to give myself a break.

There’s a lot of stuff online. It’s nice to see the story continue in some form even if it’s not official.
What’s your favorite piece of fan fiction that you have read from the fandom?
I particularly enjoy Derek Wessner’s (@TheBubblesGreen on Twitter I think) Dead Drop Scenarios. I think they are the closest thing to what would’ve happened on the show had it been renewed.

I tweeted my heart out day and night for about 2 months with the hashtag #SaveWhiskeyCavalier. I voted for Whiskey Cavalier on every survey I could. I voted several times where possible.

What drew you to the show?
I saw there were actors starring in it that were previous shows that I truly loved watching. The actors are awesome and this show really captured my attention right off the rip!! This is a great show!!!

When did you start watching Whiskey Cavalier?
Actually, in April when a friend told me I really need to watch. But I had the pilot saved since Oscar night. I was just busy with work and ballet recital rehearsals.
What drew you to the show?
One name: Bill Lawrence. Well I’ve so much fun watching Cougar Town and some episodes of Scrubs. And then that particular friend said it is the best will they/won’t they since Castle (both of us are Castle fans). She’s right and I felt emotionally attached to it right away.
What about the show makes it so special?
It is special because I haven’t been emotionally attached to a show since Castle ended. Emotionally attached meaning there is a connection with the show, a connection with the characters, like I empathise with the characters. This is the third show that has done this to me, with Parks and Recreation being the first (yeah…I freaking cried when Ann and Chris left).
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
It has the greatest potential and it could have been given a chance. Also, the original network considered the decision again after the cancelation but canceled it anyway. So it was cancelled twice by the same network.

Lots!!! We’re a global family! Just like the Whiskey team: We ARE family.

Not yet. But I do rewatches on my own time since I live in a galaxy far, far away. (I live in Asia so it’s the opposite time zone.)
How did the fandom support you in times of need?
Since we are a family, we made each other laugh through Twitter, to get through this sad time of losing not just a show but something that means a lot to us. I’m also new to Lauren Cohan’s fandom and I decided on watching The Walking Dead and her episodes of Chuck, Supernatural, and The Vampire Diaries. Some gave me tips on it – I mean when to bring out tissues.

I know that there is probably a 1% chance that Whiskey Cavalier may be renewed but please give us closure to their stories because I want some more of their backgrounds. Hopefully we get a narrative or a movie. Just bring us closure.

What drew you to the show?
I discovered it from Warner Brothers TV promotions and since I first saw it I couldn’t stop doing it
What about the show makes it so special?
It’s the combination of many factors. The first thing that happened to me was that from the first scene it transported me to a series from my childhood: The Man From Uncle, for its visual aesthetics and its international environment.
Then the characters are believable, their personal stories that gradually emerge are solid and profound. Each character complements each other well. The action scenes are dynamic, very well achieved and the protagonists are vulnerable in them, they can be hurt, they experience fear, that makes them even more real.
But above all, the chemistry between Will and Frankie is wonderful. When they see each other for the first time, competition arises between the two by making clear who is the best. Then, already in the first chapter he saves her life and from there begins an approach that does not stop even when they may be angry with each other.
And then, towards the end of the season, the mutual commitment to protect themselves, the fear of losing the other and neither of us doubts how much they love each other is already noticeable.
What was the most frustrating thing about the way Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled?
I live in Argentina and here we hardly read US digital media. I heard about the cancellation via Twitter. And I was surprised because in none of the chapters there was a decrease in quality, but rather the opposite. Each chapter surpassed the previous chapter in quality.
I don’t understand the reasons for canceling such a quality show with such a large fan base around the world. Throughout my life I’ve seen a lot of American series, they were always my favorites. And some of them weren’t too good, but they stayed for years and years in the air. It’s incomprehensible what they did with Whiskey Cavalier.
How did the show get you through dark times?
It reminded me that there is always a hope, a friend to turn to when you’re in trouble. That love can be magical. I would like to add that for those of us who have been watching movies and series all our lives and we are already over 40 years old it is very difficult for a show to move us. It’s like we’ve seen everything before!
So when a program appears that reaches our hearts, we embrace it as our own. It’s in our blood. It’s happened to him before. As a child there were many! The Man From Uncle, The Untouchables, The Little House on the Prayer, The Zorro, etc. Then in my teens and youth the one that marked me the most was Highlander: The Series. I felt identified in many ways with the protagonist and his story.
Even a lot of my aesthetic tastes come from that show and The Untouchables. Whiskey Cavalier has been, along with Castle and The Mentalist, the only series that have touched my heart in my adult life. Both Castle and The Mentalist are finished and their finale was perfect. It left me with a sweet taste despite the sadness at its end. Instead Whiskey Cavalier was left unfinished in everything.
