Win a year’s free Netflix. Rewatch ‘The OA’, ‘Lucifer, ‘Shadowhunters’, etc.

Okay, we know y’all pissed off at Netflix. Who wouldn’t be? Whenever a good show comes along, it seems like they just can’t resist canceling it – and then act really surprised when their subscribers drop off in droves.

Just this year, we’ve seen Netflix swing their well oiled axe at the heads of Lucifer, The OA, Santa Clarita Diet, GLOW, Bojack Horseman, Jessica Jones, Friends from College, The Punisher, American Vandal, One Day at a Time, The Good Cop, Travelers, Chambers, Tuca & Bertie, and Designated Survivor.

Rather than do what any sensible 21st-century company would – hire a team of digitally native community managers to promote their content – it seems Netflix instead implemented a strategy of:

1. creating a lot of content at huge expense, 
2. randomly throwing it on their platform with no discernable marketing (other than sending out some half-baked press releases to industry folks), 
3. then praying to New Media from American Gods that the series pulls a Stranger Things and actually returns on investment.

Whatever. We’re not bitter, and we’re hoping the shows we love can soon find new homes. We’ve already spoken about how we reckon cutting the Netflix cord would teach our streaming villians a valuable lesson, but on the other hand, we’ve also spoken about how rewatching our shows can help us raise awareness of their amazingness and help us get them renewed. We’re looking at a regular Catch-22 situation here.

The OA

Netflix has once again laid waste to a show before its time was up. The OA was praised by Netflix’s VP of Original Content Cindy Holland shortly before part two aired, yet she was the one to drop the news that part two would be the end of The OA. Naturally, the fanbase is angry because this show ended on the worst note. Watch out for spoilers below.

The end of part two of The OA saw another dimension of reality open up on the soundstage of a TV show in which Hap’s name is Jason Issacs and Prairie is referred to as Brit. The fourth-wall-breaking ending of part two didn’t tie up any loose ends; if anything, it just caused more. But with this cancellation, it’s the official ending Netflix is giving fans.

Shadowhunters

Now onto some truth. Shadowhunters was apparently cancelled because Freeform could no longer “make the economics work” after Netflix severed its relationship with the German production company, Constantin Film. 

Regardless, we still think it’s a great use of time to rewatch Shadowhunters on Netflix. We don’t believe that Netflix will #SaveShadowhunters, but we do believe Netflix will be a distribution partner for whoever mans up and saves the show.

Tuca & Bertie

Created by Lisa Hanawalt, animator behind the genius BoJack Horseman, the animated series Tuca & Bertie was cancelled by Netflix on July 24th after only one season. The adult comedy animation is similar to Bojack, proudly wearing its sitcom roots on its sleeve while focusing on real-life issues. 

Tuca & Bertie started with the two 30-year-old bird-women sharing an apartment and ended with each character having gone on a journey of her own. 

Netflix released a statement on their decision to axe Tuca & Bertie: “Lisa Hanawalt created a relatable yet whimsical world in Tuca & Bertie. We’re grateful to Lisa, and her fellow executive producers Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright, Steven A. Cohen, and EPs/stars Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong, along with all of the writers and animators for sharing the funny and dynamic female bird duo of Tuca and Bertie with the world.”
