Filmmaker of the Day: Sam Lucas Smith

Award-winning actor, writer, and director Sam Lucas Smith is originally from Ireland. He’s living in the USA after being selected for the BAFTA Los Angeles Newcomers Program, which recognizes up-and-coming international talent.

Sam wrote and starred in his most recent film, dark comedy Death of an Android. It was directed by Heath Cullens (Always Sunny in Philadelphia, You’re the Worst). Sam also wrote, directed, and stars in the award-winning cryptocurrency-themed comedy Buy the Dip, which continues to screen at international festivals.

Both films will be screening at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood as part of the 2019 Hollywood Comedy Shorts festival. Sam is currently in preproduction on a dark comedy series he is developing alongside a major production company.

Inspired by the endless Android vs. iPhone debate, Death of an Android follows a man’s suicide attempt cut short when a passerby intervenes and offers him the most ridiculous reason to live.

Sam won Best Supporting Actor at the Sydney Independent Film Festival for his work in the Imperative Pictures feature film Imperfect Sky and his previous acting credits include the Emmy-nominated Vikings, popular BBC drama series Waterloo Road, and TV3’s 6-part TV drama Deception, in which he stars alongside the Tony Award-winning Jim Norton.

Sam’s forthcoming work includes the title role in coming-of-age comedy feature Dub Daze, which opened at this year’s Dublin International Festival. He’s also set to star in the award-winning thriller feature film Killers Within, which had its debut screening at the Berlin Film Festival.

Sam graduated with a master’s degree in screenwriting from the National Film School at IADT and holds a bachelor’s degree in acting from the Manchester (UK) School of Theater. He previously trained at the Bow Street Screen Acting Academy in Dublin and is an ongoing member of the John Rosenfeld Studio in Los Angeles.
