‘Among Us’: How do you get the hamster and mini crewmate?

If you haven’t played the addictive detective game Among Us yet – what are you waiting for?! It’s the perfect way to bring a gaggle of gamers together in these strenuous times of isolation. The social deduction game – inspired by Mafia – unites anywhere from four to ten players (the more players the more elaborate the game.) 

Among these players are mischievous “impostors” who pick off the “crewmates” one by one. At the insanely low price of $4.99, everyone seems down to give it a try – who doesn’t enjoy deceptively murdering their friends? 

Among Us has many strengths – namely its unique replayability, smooth interface, & interactive immersion. However, the game also rocks because it simply has really cool hats & stuff you can wear. Everyone has their favorite space suit colors & accessories to make your little character a little more you.

Some players have gone the extra mile when it comes to avatar personalization. You may have seen fellow players running around with rad stuff you don’t have access too. If you’re feeling a pang of jealousy, we’re here to help you out. 

After all, it’s of the utmost importance that you stay cute & chic as you’re running around gutting your crewmates. Here’s how you can get yourself cool pets like the hamster & mini crewmate in Among Us.

How to get a pet

Unfortunately, the only way to adopt your own little buddy is by throwing a little cash at the game. The truth of the matter is that a game just can’t survive without ads or in-game spends. So if you’re down to throw a couple bucks towards Innersloth, you’d be helping them generate revenue. (Perhaps a way to say “thanks for getting me addicted.”) 

Plus – you’ll get to look fly AF! Pets were added in an update to Among Us last year. While pets are mostly just little adornments for your space dude, they sure do make people smile. Pets will always follow you around but they’ll stay by your corpse if you get killed. To add a splash of fun, the pets look mournful when you’re murdered and terrified as the kill is happening. The animation is priceless.

That’s actually a lie – it does have a price! How much exactly? Each pet bundle will cost you $2.99 across all platforms. To find and pick your desired pet bundle you need to make your way to Steam and find “Add-ons” if you’re using a PC. If you’re on mobile you can purchase the bundles in the game’s store. 

You can also easily access the store by clicking on the dollar icon in the bottom right corner or via the cosmetic computer in the lobby. Know that your purchase will not transfer across platforms – so if you want it for PC & mobile you have to pay for the pet twice.

What to choose?

In the store you’ll find five different pet bundles. From there you can have the pick of the litter. Your choices include the Hamster, Bedcrab, Brainslug, Mini Crewmate & Stickmin. You’ll always get two pets per bundle. For example, if you’ve had your eye on the flying saucer companion, you’ll need to get the Brainslug bundles which also comes with a green gooey alien buddy.

If you’re not down to chip a couple bucks to get a pet, you’ll have to be content with the free accessories already available to you. There really are a lot of choices from the get-go, so it may not always be worth it to get a pet too. But it’s up to you to make that decision for yourself!

How to equip

Once you’ve made a purchase, your little friend will be ready to join you by your side. To equip your new little guy you have to be in-game. As you’re waiting in the lobby to start your next match with other players, go to the computer at the center of the room where you can always choose your cosmetics.  

When you pull up the customization menu by interacting with the computer you’ll see your pet waiting for you in the “pet” tab. Just select the pet you want to have tag along and there you go. Easy-peasy.
