Can you play ‘The Last of Us’ on a PC? Learn every way you can play
What’s better than an entertaining & thought-provoking video game? We have the answer: nothing! Starting way back in 2013 (seems so long ago, right?) The Last of Us became a favorite for gamers everywhere, combining a gripping post-apocalyptic setting with violent video game story-telling. The sequel, The Last of Us Part II, was released earlier this year to huge anticipation & acclaim.
Does The Last of Us live up to the hype? What’s the video game even about? Can you play it on PC? Here’s everything you need to know.
What’s it about
After Naughty Dog released the first game back in 2013, The Last of Us became widely popular amongst streamers everywhere.
Taking place twenty years after a zombie pandemic, the United States has been divided and cordoned off into highly militarized zones. Infected humans run wild and survivors are killing each other for food, weapons and whatever they can get scavenge. Fourteen-year-old girl, Ellie, gets bitten by a zombie but finds out she is immune to the virus.
When a resistance group finds out about her existence, they ask Joel, a violent & mysterious smuggler, to get Ellie out of her oppressive military quarantine zone. With stunning visuals & immersive character development, The Last of Us elevated video game storytelling.
The game was widely celebrated and won over 200 awards since its initial release. The sequel The Last of Us Part II, which just won Game of the Year at the 2020 Game Awards, picks up five years after the events in the first game. Joel & Ellie are living in Wyoming in a small community, living peacefully. But when her entire world gets turned upside down, Ellie must travel to Seattle to seek vengeance.
The newest iteration plunges the gamer into moral & ethical quandaries, exploring the darkest sides of human nature and the complexity of cyclical violence. If you like strong female characters, emotional character arcs, and immersive gameplay, both of The Last of Us games might be for you.
Where to play
Unfortunately, the only place you can play The Last of Us is through a Playstation system. One of the top games for Playstation, the highly acclaimed video game is produced exclusively for the company. As of now, Playstation has no plans to share The Last of Us or The Last of Us Part II to any other gaming system including PC.
Though buying a Playstation for one game may be a bit overboard, getting one for The Last Of Us is worth it. If a video game could be a masterpiece then this could be the gaming Mona Lisa. While playing The Last of Us on PC would be convenient, you have to make sacrifices for masterpieces sometimes.
A super cool feature the second game offers is broadened accessibility. Now anyone, regardless of disability or skill can play The Last of Us Part II. You can play the game by sound alone, or change up the focus to see better. Over sixty accessibility options are available in gameplay in areas, controls, visual aids, audio clues, navigation, and combat.
Possible TV adaptation
In March, HBO announced it was working on a TV adaption of the hit video game. Craig Mazin, creator of the acclaimed mini-series Chernobyl, is pairing up with The Last of Us’ creative director, Neil Druckman to write and executive-produce the series.
“Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus,” Mazin said back in May when the news dropped.
As for casting, many fans want Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Maisie Williams to play Joel & Ellie, respectively. However, unless Ellie is aged up, Williams, twenty-three, is too old to play a fourteen-year-old. You can’t blame the Last of Us fans for trying though. The characters have an uncanny resemblance to the GOT favorites.

Great article!!
I respectfully disagree with your notion that Maisie Williams is too old for the role of Ellie. Because Craig Mazin has stated that the relationship between Ellie and Dina will be kept, means that it will be sexual. If Ellie’s relationship goes sexual, in any way, by law Ellie’s character has to be aged up to a minimum of 17 years old. The actor who plays Ellie will have to be, at a minimum, 21 years old. Which means that a 14 year old actress will not be picked for that role.
For example, Daenerys Targaryen’s character in the books started out as 13 years old. Daenerys was forced to marry at that age and was having sexual activities, at that age. By law, HBO decided to age up Daenerys age to 17 years old. HBO proceeded to cast Emilia Clarke as Daenerys. Emilia Clarke was 22 years old when she signed on to play Daenerys. No one complained about that casting. No one batted an eye. In fact, everyone forgot that Daenerys was supposed to be 13 years old.
In my opinion, I don’t think the age factor is an isssue. The most important aspects of Ellie that needs to be covered are the emotional side and the fighting/weapons handling performances. These two aspects are more important than the actor’s age who plays the character.
The only people who complains about casting issues are the book readers. They complain about everything in terms of movie/tv adaptations. The gamers will be no different. HBO will need some of those gamers to watch the show but, HBO will be going for a lot of their 38 million HBO subscribers to watch it more so than gamers. A ton of those 38 million subscribers may have heard of the Last of Us Game but, never played it. The same thing with Game of Thrones. Only book readers knew about Game of Thrones but, HBO needed a lot more of the 38 million subscribers to watch it. It worked out for HBO. I think HBO will take the same approach with the Last of Us series.
Based on this, I strongly believe that HBO will want to go with Maisie Williams, because she can do everything that’s needed to make you believe that she is Ellie. Besides, Maisie Williams already has a strong following with those 38 million HBO subscribers. I don’t believe HBO will pass that up.
Out of all of the actors that fans have casted for Ellie, only Maisie Williams will command strong star power that will bring in tens of millions for the role of Ellie outside of the Last of Us game fans. In other words, HBO will probably be banking on millions of Game of Thrones fans watching the series because of Maisie Williams playing a role that is similar to Arya Stark.
It’s too much for HBO to pass up. Kaitlyn Dever, Dafne Keene, Sophia Lillis and others, are some of the main actors that have been mentioned a lot to play Ellie. None of them will get the numbers that HBO needs from HBO subscribers to watch the Last of Us. They tried with Dafne Keene in His Dark Materials. The show never cracked 1 million viewers. The most views His Dark Materials ever received was 500 thousand viewers. Nothing more.
I really don’t think HBO will take a risk on an uknown for the role of Ellie when they have an actress who can play the role and is a household name. Especially, when it’s a given that casting Maisie Williams as Ellie will definitely bring the fans over from Game of Thrones. Then, when you add the Last of Us Game fans coupled with casual hbo subscribers who knows nothing about the game, HBO will wind up with at least 10 to 20 million viewers watching the pilot episode. These are numbers that HBO is not passing up. Especially, with the tons of marvel and Star Wars content coming from Disney plus for the next 2 years.
There is too much competition that is coming for HBO in the next 2 to 3 years. HBO will be banking on the House of the Dragon and the Last of Us series. HBO is definitely not going to make a mistake on the Last of Us. Maisie Williams is the best choice for Ellie.
Tell me, who would be a better choice than Maisie Williams. I don’t see it.
