Groundhog Day 2021: The best memes about Punxsutawney Phil

Humans are weird. This is undeniable. However, nothing proves it quite like Groundhog Day. A group of men in top hats pull out a living groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil, whisper kind words to it and then recite a poem that declares whether we’ll be having a long winter or if spring is right around the corner.

This unusual ritual began in Pennsylvania in 1887 and still happens every February 2nd – including today.

The internet, of course, has memes about the admittedly cute tradition. Here are some of our favorites to share with friends today.

The results

Of course, we first need to talk about this year’s results. It’s been declared by Punxsutawney Phil himself that this year there will be six more weeks of winter. ❄️

Seems familiar . . .

A reference to the movie Groundhog Day, after nearly a year of being stuck in a pandemic it feels like we’ve all been reliving the same day over & over again. A pretty boring day for that matter.

Cutie

Okay this isn’t really a meme and this isn’t Punxsutawney Phil, but this cute groundhog named Phil won us over so much that he won a spot in this article. Look at him eat that apple! Listen to him munch! It’s too cute to handle.

Ground . . . hug?

This cute Peanuts comic is worth sharing every year. It’s funny, timeless, and doesn’t remind us that winter still looms for more than a month.

Getting a second opinion

There’s something we’ve always wondered – the U.S. has a lot of different weather patterns, because it’s so big. Surely Punxsutawney Phil’s predictions can’t apply to everyone.

Apparently the Audubon Nature Institute agrees with this line of thinking. They sought a second opinion from one of their residents – turns out New Orleans might be able to expect an early spring.

Too cold

We don’t like being cold. The news of more winter isn’t welcome at all. We’ll be hiding under a pile of blankets until the temperature hits sixty degrees fahrenheit.

Arizona winters

Arizona summers are so hot that a longer winter is probably more of a blessing than a curse.

Wait . . . more on Arizona

We ended up in a rabbit hole and discovered that Arizona has their own version of Punxsutawney Phil – except it’s a rattlesnake. This slightly more menacing creature predicts an early spring if he sees his shadow.

Work schedule

You know, we could really get behind that. Do you think that job would come with benefits?

Fanart

Did someone say Punxsutawney Phil fanart? Oh, that was us. Well anyway, this is a fantastic drawing.

Someone is always learning

We love this tweet. We love that we got a brief glimpse into their revelation of how weird Groundhog day is. And yes, it has always been like this.
