“People have it so wrong”: Why is Britney Spears’s father speaking out?
Since the release of Framing Britney Spears, the documentary sparked anger & sadness from folks all over the internet for the pop star. Since its release, many people have been advocating for Britney Spears, and calling out her father for mistreating and controlling her even as a grown adult under conservatorship.
However, how does the father of Britney Spears feel about the situation? What does he have to say for himself? Apparently, Britney’s father is not backing down or changing his stance one bit. Read all about what he had to say to fans of Britney here.
Her father’s message
Apparently the father of Britney Spears, sixty-eight-year-old Jamie Spears, does not believe he is the bad guy in this situation. On ABC News’ Good Morning America, his attorney Vivian Lee Thoreen announced on Thursday in a virtual appearance: “I understand that every story wants to have a villain, but people have it so wrong here”.
“This is a story about a fiercely loyal, loving and dedicated father who rescued his daughter from a life-threatening situation. People were harming her, and they were exploiting her,” Thoreen continued. The Holland & Knight lawyer added that the reason why her father even put Britney Spears under the conservatorship in the first place was for that exact reason.
Thoreen explained that following the “Womanizer” singer’s public breakdown the world witnessed in 2008 which unfolded after her divorce with Kevin Federline, a chaotic custody battle, and hospitalizations, her father needed to step forward by making the professional decisions for Britney. She added that Britney’s assets “were being mismanaged, and she was being taken advantage of financially by those around her”.
A life saver?
Vivian Lee Thoreen even went as far to assure that “Jamie saved Britney’s life”. The lawyer said: “He has collaborated with her to help her regain custody of her children. He has brought her finances back from disaster. And he’s created a safe environment for her to live her life the way she wants, away from the media that caused her so much pain”.
Thoreen even pointed out that the father of Britney Spears boosted the star’s $2.8 million fortune up to around $60 million under the conservatorship. ““I think we have to remember how this conservatorship was started and that Britney needed help, and that’s why the conservatorship was put into place and why Jamie was appointed”, she added.
LA Times added that Jamie’s attorney, who specialized in trust, estate, and conservatorship & guardianship matters even was a part in the documentary on Britney Spears before rejoining her father in his legal team just last year. In the documentary, Thoreen was seen saying that she had never seen a person successfully leave a conservatorship.
#FreeBritney
The #FreeBritney movement has been going on for quite a while now, long before the Framing Britney Spears documentary was even released. The movement escalated when Britney’s attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, announced in court last August that she no longer wanted her dad to serve as her sole conservator and instead wanted a bank as conservator of her finances.
Ingham even added in November that Britney Spears is “afraid of her father” and does not want to perform again if he remains in control of her career & finances. However, Thoreen defended Jamie in her rebuttal and proceeded to paint him as a great father. She spoke about how the two spent time together in Louisiana during the pandemic and gardened, took long drives, and cooked and ate Southern comfort food together.
“In that time, Britney never expressed those words to her father. She’s never asked him to step aside”, Thoreen expressed. “Jamie loves his daughter. And like any other family, issues come up from time to time, but this in no way takes away from the love and support they have for each other. Britney knows that her daddy loves her, and she knows that she can call on him any time, conservatorship or not”.
