Celebrate body positive icon Lizzo: How much is the singer’s net worth?
Up until two years ago, you’d be forgiven for not knowing Lizzo. Nowadays, she and her music are everywhere. If you’ve scrolled through TikTok or turned on the radio any time since 2019, chances are you’ve heard a track from her album Cuz I Love You.
While that album was technically Lizzo’s third, it was her first with a major American record label. It was also massively successful.
At the beginning of 2019, Lizzo’s net worth hovered around $3 million. Cuz I Love You more than tripled that number. Some people felt like Lizzo came out of nowhere, but she’s been a hardworking musical performer for years. Let’s look back at Lizzo’s life, career, and the steps she took to grow a $10 million net worth.
Born in Detroit
Lizzo was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 27, 1988. She had two siblings, and her family remained in Detroit for the first few years of her life. Lizzo loved music from an early age. Her family is deeply religious, and she grew up surrounded by gospel music and singing in her own church choir.
That early interest in music quickly became an interest in making popular music of her own. At fourteen Lizzo started rapping and making her own songs. She and her best friends at the time even started a rap group called the Cornrow Clique. They played their songs at local community events.
Beginning a career
Lizzo’s first foray into the professional world of music creation wasn’t with the Cornrow Clique. Her beginning professional gig was as part of a three-piece, all-female R&B group called The Chalice. With The Chalice, Lizzo was formally introduced to the music industry.
That group independently released their first album, titled We Are The Chalice, in 2012. It didn’t blast them to super-stardom, but it was a local success, and it gave the entire group a leg to stand on in the music world. The album is still available today on The Chalice’s bandcamp page. You can pick it up for five bucks.
Going solo
After working with The Chalice, Lizzo went solo. Her debut album, Lizzobangers, released in 2013. That album wasn’t the smash hit she’d later put out, but Lizzo began touring the U.S. & UK with it.
Lizzo continued to tour, play, and write. In 2014 she and her bandmates from The Chalice were featured on Plectrumelectrum, an album by Prince & 3rdEyeGirl. That was just the beginning of Lizzo’s expanding presence. She was soon making regular appearances on late night talk shows and MTV. She would often speak about body positivity and her struggles with self-confidence alongside anecdotes about her time in the music industry.
In December of 2015, Lizzo released her second album. Big Grrrl Small World made more of an impact than Lizzobangers had. Lizzo didn’t have a multi-million dollar net worth yet, but her career was starting to pick up some serious heat.
Making it big
Off of her growing success, Lizzo was able to sign on with a major record label. Atlanta Records signed Lizzo in 2016, and in October of that year she put out her first EP with them. Coconut Oil received rave reviews. Rolling Stone listed it as the fourteenth best pop album of the year.
By 2019, all Lizzo’s hard work had more-or-less paid off. Between her television appearances and musical heavy lifting, Lizzo was worth around $3 million. No one, even Lizzo herself, knew that she was just getting warmed up.
In April of that year, Lizzo put out her first full-length album with Atlanta Records, Cuz I Love You. The album’s track “Truth Hurts” became Lizzo’s first number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Cuz I Love You gained mainstream success at the same time it blew up on a little-known social app, TikTok.
With mainstream attention and an Internet fandom, Lizzo was officially a superstar by 2020. The pandemic hasn’t slowed her down. Lizzo has signed a deal with Amazon Studios to develop new projects with them, including a reality competition series. There’s no doubt that she’s working on new music at the same time, and she stays actively involved with her fanbase online.
Today Lizzo’s net worth is over $10 million. It doesn’t seem like her career could boom any more, but people thought the same thing in 2019. We can’t wait to see what Lizzo does next.
