Why won’t Lorde perform at the MTV VMAs award show?
It’s that time of year again, party people. The MTV VMAs are right around the corner and people are excited (are they?). Well, MTV doesn’t have the same pull the network once did and we do wonder if zoomers hold moon men in the same soft spot as the millennials who tuned into Carson on TRL every weekday after school.
Whether you’re nostalgic for the network that killed the radio star or not, however, you can’t deny the cavalcade of super celebs the MTV VMAs bring together year after year. Now, 2021 wasn’t your typical year in music (or anything else), so we won’t be getting a typical award show.
In fact, there have already been some changes in the line up to the big night. Lorde was supposed to perform at this year’s MTV VMAs award show, but new buzz lighting up headlines says otherwise. So what’s the tea? Here’s what we’ve found.
Solar Power
Lorde came back into the collective headspace of music fans everywhere earlier this summer when she released “Solar Power” back in June. The hit single & title track from her subsequent album had fans hooked on those Lorde licks once again, and it didn’t take long for the artist to throw her fans for a loop.
She followed up the single with “Stoned at the Nail Salon” in late July ahead of Solar Power’s release and fans quickly learned Lorde had a few tricks up her sleeve. Her new album’s second moody single was a stark contrast to the bright & bubbly “Solar Power” and fans were rabid to see what other innovations the pop star would come up with on her latest album.
Fans had been waiting for Solar Power for four years, as Lorde hasn’t dropped a record since 2017’s Melodrama before her latest album dropped. Lorde heads were happy to have the artist in their lives again, and it would only be appropriate for her to perform with her fellow colleagues at this year’s MTV VMAs. News this week says she’ll be skipping the stage.
Production elements
Jezebel reported on Sunday that Lorde will not be performing at this year’s MTV VMAs award show due to “a change in production elements”. The publication admittedly stated the meaning behind this syntax is murky at best, but this solitary clue comes from the MTV VMA official Twitter account which let fans know last Saturday.
There doesn’t seem to be bad blood between Lorde & MTV, as the tweet stated “We love Lorde and cannot wait for her to perform on the VMA stage in the future!”. Okay, so we won’t see Lorde at this year’s VMAs. So what can we expect to see, and who is going to take home the big award this year?
Host, nominee, & performer
Pitchfork reported in late August that Doja Cat will host this year’s MTV VMAs. Furthermore, the viral artist will also be up for five moon men, including the most coveted award of the night, Video of the Year.
Furthermore, we may not see Lorde on stage this year, but we will see host Doja Cat perform alongside some of the hottest artists of 2021 at the award show. What other hot artists, you ask? Well, reports say Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, and Shawn Mendes will be hitting the big stage as well.
Okay, so we know a little bit of what to expect and what not to expect at this year’s MTV VMAs. The show starts at 8 p.m.EST this Sunday September 12th, and will come to audiences live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. We may have some clues about what’s to come, but if past VMAs are any indication, we’ll get some surprises along with what we know.
