Taylor Swift’s surprise albums: Is she making them due to quarantine?
Today is an exciting day for Swifties. Taylor Swift announced this morning that she’s dropping her ninth studio album at midnight – and we’re freaking out. Two Taylor Swift albums in a year?
Taylor Swift, like the rest of us, has been “bored in the house and in the house bored” as the Curtis Roach song goes (and in Swift’s case, her mansion). With all this time on her hands, why not make some albums? It’s better than complaining about the unfairness of not being able to go out in a global pandemic or comparing your cushy situation to prison. (Ahem, Ellen!)
Anyhoo, what can we expect from this early holiday present from Taylor Swift? Here’s what we know so far about her new album.
Dropping the bombshell
The musician took to Twitter this morning to announce her followup to folklore, which came out just a few months ago. “I’m elated to tell you that my 9th studio album, and folklore’s sister record, will be out tonight at midnight eastern,” she tweeted. “It’s called evermore.”
We can only assume evermore will be excellent, as folklore was widely loved and subject to critical praise. The Guardian wrote about folklore: “Her emotional acuity has never been more assured. Variety chimed in: “It’s hard to remember any contemporary pop superstar that has indulged in a more serious, or successful, act of sonic palate cleansing.”
Billboard also raved: “A project created in isolation, Folklore finds Swift pouring every inch of her current psyche, amidst an imperfect reality, into her songwriting. We’re fortunate that she decided to share it with us.”
What inspired Swift to write another album?
Taylor Swift commented on her decision to release two albums almost back-to-back; a move that’s pretty unorthodox. “To put it plainly,” she said, “we just couldn’t stop writing songs.”
Taylor Swift continued: “to try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in.”
“I’ve never done this before,” Swift added. “In the past I’ve always treated albums as one-off eras and moved onto planning the next one after an album was released. There was something different with folklore. In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning.”
Fan responses
Pretty much everyone on the planet is raving about the announcement. Some celebrities took to Twitter to share their excitement. Ice skater Adam Rippon wrote: “I can tell 2020 has really put me through *it* because I almost cried from the THOUGHT of listening to new songs. Midnight can’t come fast enough. @taylorswift13!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Broadway actress Kristin Chenoweth also tweeted: “I’ve got goosebumps!!!!!!! We’re ready, Taylor. @taylorswift13 #evermorealbum #evermore.”
One fan, @invisxblestring, replied to Swift’s tweet: “TAYLOR IM IN MATH CLASS AND YOURE DROPPING AN ALBUM I LITERALLY AM CRYING AND EVERYONE THINKS IM WEIGHT BUT IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS I LOVE YOU #evermore.”
Another fan @witchywlw wrote: “taylor i am too mentally unstable for this . . . give me a break . . . . . i haven’t finished digesting folklore yet . . . . but also thank you . . . . guess it’s time to cry now.”
Marriage rumors
As if a new album wasn’t almost too much for us to handle, Swift also gave fans a look at a video for one of evermore’s songs, “Willow”. In the photo she shared, she’s wearing a white silk dress that looks suspiciously like a wedding dress. Some fans are now theorizing her and her longtime boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, might have tied the knot.
This adds to fan theories that dropped after her Netflix doc Miss Americana, where Swift dons something that looks like a diamond ring.
One fan tweeted “this looks like a bridal photo to me, hmm tay tay?? is you married bestie?? #evermore @taylorswift 13.” Another shared a theory: “I’m getting wedding vibes from this picture. This girl got married and this music video Willow is the footage of her wedding. #taylorswift #Evermore.”
