‘Captain Marvel’: All-female Marvel movie heading to box office?
Since the first phase of the Marvel Universe entered cinematic consciousness between 2008 and 2012 with movies like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Marvel’s The Avengers, there’s been much talk of a female Marvel movie breaking through the MCU boys’ club.
For a while, that talk was restricted to offering Scarlett Johansson’s character Black Widow her own film. However, as the universe continues to expand, and more women showed off their immense powers within it, that conversation has veered more passionately towards an all-female Marvel movie.
Though a female-led Marvel flick coming to the box office is still yet to be confirmed, it definitely seems as though it’s on the cards. Here’s everything we know about the potential all-female Marvel movie so far.
Marvel head Kevin Feige has been talking about it since 2014
Amid the continual upset that Black Widow had still not been given her own solo movie, Kevin Feige assured Comic Book Resources a female-led movie “can certainly be done”. The issue, he told the website, was due to the challenge of juggling several franchises at once and introducing female superheroes to the box office ahead of their own potential movie.
“I hope we do it sooner rather than later,” Feige explained. “We find ourselves in the very strange position of managing more franchises than most people have.” He then mused whether “you have to put one franchise on hold for three or four years in order to introduce a new one” in the pursuit of a female-led standalone movie.
The MCU contains enough female superheroes to make it happen
Counter to Feige’s point, enough female superheroes have since been introduced in new and existing Marvel franchises to make an all-female box office arrival a distinct possibility.
As well as Black Widow, there’s also Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) from Guardians of the Galaxy, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) from Thor: Ragnarok, Ramonda, Nakia, Okoye, and Shuri from Black Panther (Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright) as well as the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) from the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Not to mention Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in the first female-led Marvel movie of the same name, which was released earlier. What Marvel fan wouldn’t want to see a movie in which all of these spectacular women join forces?
The women of the MCU are on board
According to io9, the women of the MCU recently approached Feige at an event and asked him for their own Avengers movie. At a press conference for Thor: Ragnarok, Thompson disclosed, “Recently, I marched up with a couple of other women that work in Marvel and we went to Kevin, ‘What about a movie with some female superheroes? Like all of them?’”
In response, Feige commented, “It was a pretty amazing moment to be somewhere and have your shoulder get tapped and turn around [to see that] every female hero we have is standing there going, ‘How about it?’ Although he said “yes”, the question now is when exactly can we look forward to seeing one?
Feige is remaining cryptic about Marvel female-led movie
In a recent interview with Vulture, Feige was cagey as ever in talking about when audiences can look forward to seeing an all-female Marvel movie at the box office. “It is all about figuring out when and how. But by the way, many of them have already filmed additional scenes in upcoming movies, so some of that is gonna come sooner rather than later. All of them will be seen again.”
As the website points out, Feige is likely only talking about the appearance of female superheroes in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, which isn’t quite the same as uniting them all for a standalone movie.
Is change afoot? A Black Widow movie is reportedly in the works
With Jac Shaeffer recently announced as the writer for a Black Widow movie, and Chris Evans (Captain America) letting slip the movie is on its way, it seems Marvel may finally be listening to audience demands for more female-led content.
Considering it took Marvel the best part of a decade to finally get around to giving the character her own script, however, fans could still be waiting a while for an all-female MCU movie to finally get the greenlight.
