Gay movies: All the best films to stream when you’re quarantined
Are you ready to hunker down and not leave your home while the rest of the world battles the coronavirus? Do you want some stellar gay movies to watch while you wait for everything calm down out there? Self-imposed quarantines are all something that we’re probably considering now that the coronavirus is a pandemic, but how to keep ourselves entertained?
So what LGBTQ+ films are you hoping to check out while you’re cuddled under the covers? Well here are some of our favorites for you to check out. We’ve focused largely on feel-good and fun for this list.
The Birdcage (1996)
Robin Williams and Nathan Lane star as an openly gay couple whose son (Dan Futterman) gets engaged to a daughter (Calista Flockhart) of an ultra-conservative Republican senator (Gene Hackman). The pair have to go back into the closet for the upcoming visit and comedy of errors unfold.
The Birdcage is not only considered a landmark gay movie, but also just a plain funny movie. Williams and Lane have great chemistry together, which is definitely a plus. GLAAD praised the film, focusing on “going beyond the stereotypes to see the characters’ depth and humanity. The film celebrates differences and points out the outrageousness of hiding those differences.”
Handsome Devil (2016)
Handsome Devil is a comedy-drama coming of age story set in the backdrop of a private Irish, rugby obsessed boarding school. Outsider Ned (Fionn O’Shea) finds himself roommates with the school’s new rugby star Conor (Nicholas Galitzine). An unlikely romance burgeons between the two as they bond over their shared love of music. Unfortunately, however, the school’s homophobia is strong.
Handsome Devil is utterly charming with O’Shea and Galitzine being the highlights of the movie along with Andrew Scott. Add in a stellar soundtrack and this has all the makings of a great coming of age movie to watch.
Hurricane Bianca (2016)
Bianca del Rio shines in this hilarious and topical comedy. When gay teacher Richard Martinez moves to a small town in Texas from NYC, he finds himself subsequently fired from his job. Donning the disguise of his alter-ego, Bianca, Richard plans to read the school to filth and take revenge against those who wronged him. The Netflix film was so popular that it spawned a sequel.
RuPaul makes an appearance in the film along with Willam Belli, Shangela, Joslyn Fox, and Alyssa Edwards. So if you want to get some Drag Race fix, then this is definitely a great film to do so with.
Ideal Home (2018)
Ideal Home is the perfect film for if you’re sick or avoiding getting sick with its warm and fuzzy tone. Erasmus (Steve Coogan) and Paul (Paul Rudd) are a childless couple when 10-year-old Bill (Jack Gore) shows up claiming to be Erasmus’ estranged grandson. With Beau (Jack McDorman), Erasmus’ never known son, in jail, Eramus and Paul are Bill’s best chance of avoiding foster care. What follows is a sweet and fuzzy movie about the importance of family.
Ideal Home is a very sweet film, very chicken soup to the soul sort of venture. Sometimes, that’s all you need. Seeing people learn the true meaning of family and whatnot. Plus the cast is insanely charming in the best ways, smoothing over any inconsistencies in the script.
Were the World Mine (2008)
Inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Were the World Mine is a fantasy musical comedy drama that is exactly what you need. Timothy (Tanner Cohen) is a gay student at a private boy’s school, who is cast as Puck in a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He creates the flower love-in-idleness from the play, using it to have his crush, Jonathan (Nathaniel David Becker) to fall in love with him. Things, however, go awry.
Were the World Mine has killer songs, fun choreography, and a very sweet love story at the center of the musical. It’s a must for fans of Shakespeare and musicals.
