Lucky’s Supermarkets: Businesses closing forever due to COVID-19
The effects of COVID-19 on the world stretch far past public health. With everyone sheltering in place during the pandemic, many businesses were hit hard by the lack of income coming in. Sure, governments tried to bail out businesses as best as they could. But there’s only so much money that can save a sinking ship.
Plenty of companies are now being forced to shut down stores or declare bankruptcy to stay afloat until they’re allowed to open back up. But unfortunately, some companies just had to shut their doors for good because the loss was that great. Hopefully, none of your favorite brands are on the list below.
Numerous small businesses
We’re starting with the obvious tragic victim: small business owners. Whether it’s a specialty boutique, a mom and pop restaurant, or a salon, thousands of small business owners lost their livelihood thanks to the pandemic. Obviously, there’s too many to list here, but we wanted to acknowledge the small businesses struggling through all this.
Sies Marjan
Opened only five years ago, the luxury fashion brand is bidding adieu thanks to COVID-19. Known for its bright patterns and palettes, and J Low approved sponsorship, the store had to close its doors effective immediately. So if you want a $1,500 jacket for only $400, Nordstroms has discounted their Sies Marjan stock deeply.
Pier 1 Imports
The home decor store was already in trouble, filing for bankruptcy back in February before the pandemic hit. But thanks to COVID-19, the brand couldn’t find a buyer. So, all 540 stores will be closed and sold off, with its web sales going offline July 15th.
Souplantation
No surprise, no one wanted to go to a buffet during COVID-19. Unfortunately for Garden Fresh, parent company of Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes, all 97 locations will be closing permanently.
Lucky’s Supermarkets
While the natural food store isn’t shutting all their doors, it took a huge blow when it lost its equity stake from Kroger Co., the biggest grocery company in the world. Almost all of its Florida locations are set to close, and once done, Lucky’s Supermarkets will only own 7 open stores. We can’t see them lasting for much longer after that.
Sears/K-Mart
Let’s be real: the company hasn’t officially “announced” that they’re closing yet, but Sears has been a dying horse that just won’t die for years now. Even before Coronavirus, the brand was fading fast. There’s no way the store closures due to COVID-19 didn’t just put the final nail in the coffin for the department store brand.
