Christmas time is here. And, for once, no one is complaining too much about Christmas appearing earlier than normal. 2020 is such a mess of a year that people are grabbing onto the first sign of Christmas joy they can get and are refusing to let it go until the actual holiday ends. With that, people are looking for some truly excellent Christmas movies to watch.
Let’s not talk about the dramatic affairs though. In 2020, we need some laughter, especially as we celebrate Christmas in the middle of a global pandemic. Since we need a little Christmas, right this very minute, here’s the comedy gold of Christmas movies to watch for 2020. So, time to deck the halls and make some excellent hot cocoa because Christmas is here to stay.
The Santa Clause
The Santa Clause is one of those classic, comforting movies. When Santa accidentally dies, ordinary divorced dad Scott (Tim Allen) completes his route and activates, well, the Santa Clause.
He becomes the new Santa and all the trappings that come with being the jolliest man around. Now it’s time for that Christmas cookie bingeing to begin as Scott tries to get the hang of being Santa.
It’s a Christmas classic for a reason!
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
This Shane Black directed crime comedy has all the trappings of Christmas as things just go from bad to worse for Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) and “Gay” Perry van Shrike (Val Kilmer). After witnessing a body dump, the two find themselves dealing with a dead body that has a bullet from Shrike’s gun in it. As the two try to figure out just what’s going on things just seem to go from bad to worse.
If you want a comedy that’s not Christmas cheese, but still has Christmas in it? Then this is the one of you.
Home Alone
Home Alone has made an entire generation of kids want to make elaborate traps in their home to catch nefarious burglars. Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) gets left behind when his family goes on vacation, so he enjoys the time by himself & having the run of his home. While his desperate mother tries to get home, Kevin defeats crooks and learns the true meaning of Christmas.
The sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is also pretty good, but, you know, don’t watch the third one. What third one?
Krampus
Want a Christmas horror-comedy instead? Krampus is based on the legend of, well, Krampus, who is sort of the anti-Santa that will drag naughty kids to Hell. The real hilarity, however, comes from the dialogue of the film as you just watch a hella dysfunctional family try to get through the holidays in one piece – and that’s before the demon Santa is introduced.
Elf
Elf is almost twenty-years-old, can you believe that? The Will Ferrell movie, Elf, is the quintessential Christmas comedy film. From “smiling is my favorite” to the sugary spaghetti abomination that Buddy eats, there’s a ton of iconic moments in the film that will fill your heart with Christmas cheer.
Elf is just one of the films that will withstand the test of time and be a favorite for years to come.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Chevy Chase stars in, arguably, the best and most memorable of the Vacation film series. Christmas Vacation catches the highs and lows of the holiday season from dealing with annoying family members, to getting that perfect Christmas tree, to an annual holiday breakdown. Not to mention, the endless hilarity of that Christmas Eve dinner that never, ever ends. It’s utter perfection.
