Will Lifetime’s ‘Ghosts of Christmas Past’ break your heart?
If there’s one thing that’s certain in the world, it’s that Lifetime is a reliable source of TV movies – especially on the holidays. And this year, they’re airing more Christmas movies than ever before. What a great way to ring in the season!
One film we’re especially anticipating is Ghosts of Christmas Past. In this film, the ghost is of the emotional variety: our main character, Ellie, must find peace with the dates she ghosted before Christmas comes.
What’s this movie all about? And how did Lifetime start airing so many Christmas movies, anyway? Let’s go over the history of this program block, then break down Ghosts of Christmas Past.
About “It’s A Wonderful Lifetime”
Lifetime has been making movies for TV for a very long time and found great success in that production & release method. But their Christmas program section didn’t begin until 2012, with the launch of the “It’s A Wonderful Lifetime” event. During this time, they premiered new Christmas movies and played holiday specials for the last two months of the year.
Apparently, it was a successful venture because Lifetime has brought the program back every year since then. In 2021, they’ve been premiering more than a few Christmas films over the past few months, and people have been loving them.
Ghosts of Christmas Past is one of those heartwarming films. Let’s dig into this movie a bit more, then see how you can watch it in time for the holidays.
Who’s behind Ghosts of Christmas Past?
As mentioned before, Ghosts of Christmas Past follows Ellie, a “serial ‘ghoster’ on dating apps”. When a fortune tells her she has to make amends with the men she abandoned, or else she’ll never find true love, she sets out on an apology tour, tracking down her lost loves to say she’s sorry. And maybe she’ll find the love she’s looking for along the way.
The film is produced by Champlain Media, whose presence is surprisingly scarce online. From what we were able to find, they’re a Canadian company run by Tom Berry & Reel One. Reel One is also a Tom Berry-owned production studio, and it “develops, finances, produces and distributes commercial television films & series for broadcast networks & digital platforms around the world,” specializing in Hallmark & Lifetime films.
Tom Berry is actually an interesting behind-the-scenes figure. An entertainment executive, he formed the company Allegro Films in the 1980s to help produce feature films, but he wore many hats too, from writing to acting. In 2001, Reel One (then called Premiere Bobine) was founded, and Berry has continued his film work there, producing many romance films and making companies like Champlain.
This brings us back to Ghosts of Christmas Past. The film is directed by Virginia Abramovich, who made her directorial debut with the 2020 movie Between Waves. Most recently, according to her website, “my creative journey has taken me into directing romantic feature comedies, which is an absolute blast.” She’s been making short films for years and is now directing plenty of love stories. Good for her!
