‘Home Alone’: Will Macaulay Culkin appear in the reboot?
This week, a resounding collective groan bellowed across the globe from every millennial who holds their childhood memories dear. The sound of massive discomfort all stems from news saying the 90s Christmas classic to put all others to shame, Home Alone, is set for a reboot (say it ain’t so).
Yes, it’s official – Hollywood has declared nothing is sacred and we must all prepare for the Home Aloneverse which is sure to come over the next decade or so. Furthemore, Home Alone for the next generation is coming sooner than we could have ever guessed, as reports say the flick is just around the corner from dropping. Ready to unwrap this can of worms? (Sigh) Let’s see what all the hubbub is about.
Around the corner
Variety reported on Thursday that a Home Alone reboot is in the works. Well, the flick is more than in the works – the movie will drop on audiences this November, ahead of the 2021 holiday season. Reports say the movie will head directly & exclusively to Disney Plus, where the original film & sequel are available to stream year-round.
The film boasts Jojo Rabbit child star Archie Yates to take on the Macaulay Culkin Kevin McCallister role, although details from the original film will be slightly off. For example, Yates plays Max Mercer in the reboot, and he’s left home alone when his family heads off to Japan for the holidays, instead of France or Florida.
Alright, we’re sure plenty of people are ready to see Home Alone through a contemporary lens, but let’s address the elephant in the room. How could the story of Home Alone be told in 2021?
Home alone how?
If you’ve seen Home Alone as many times as us (and most garden-variety millennials), you’ll know the story couldn’t exist with cell phones. Furthermore, the crux of both 1990’s Home Alone & 1992’s Home Alone 2: Lost in New York lies in the ineptitude of public transportation & air travel in a pre 9/11 world.
Today, the problem of hunting down Macaulay Culkin could be solved simply using a “find my iPhone” location tracker. However, maybe we’re being a little too “huge brain” about this whole thing. After all, writers for the reboot Mikey Day & Streeter Seidell have worked with original writer John Hughes on the new flick, so maybe the new Home Alone movie will capture some of the magic of the original.
Fresh faces
Speaking of the original, reports say Buzz McCallister himself, Devin Ratray, will join the cast of the new film. There’s no word about Macaulay Culkin coming back for any role, but only time will tell.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Ellie Kemper will join the new cast, along with SNL’s Kenan Thompson & Chris Parnell, Deadpool 2’s Rob Delaney, Living with Yourself’s Aisling Bea, Veep’s Tim Simons, The Secret Life of Pets 2’s Pete Holmes, and Toy Story 4’s Ally Maki.
Home Sweet Home Alone
The Home Alone reboot is titled Home Sweet Home Alone and comes to audiences November 12th. The film comes from director Dan Mazer, who is no stranger to comedy films. Mazer directed Dirty Grandpa and helped write the Borat movies, along with 2016’s Office Christmas Party, greasing up his Christmas movie chops.
It’s hard to imagine a Home Alone movie without Macaulay Culkin, but we suppose we can’t go full on Scrooge with Home Sweet Home Alone until we catch a glimpse of the new flick. And who knows? We wouldn’t be surprised if we see Kevin McCallister show up for a cameo.
