Hot take: All the worst people of 2020 according to Film Daily
2020 has been a year. No one expected a global pandemic, multiple life-changing elections worldwide, and the death of movie theaters when we celebrated the new year. As we look forward to 2021, we’re also looking back at the trashfire of a year we’ve been through. Hot take: we’re not expecting 2021 to be much better.
While a lot has happened this year, there have been some people in particular who just made 2020 worse in their own special way. Sure, we could go for the low-hanging fruit of politicians, but many media figures have been spreading suffering instead of love this year.
We collaborated with the full Film Daily team to create our hot take on who the worst people of 2020 were. While some people on this list seem obvious, others you may have forgotten were human pieces of garbage this year. Goodbye 2020, hopefully we’ll be leaving all the people on this list behind with you.
Film Daily
We’ll start with the obvious hacks: ourselves. With hot take pieces such as “‘Supernatural’s Dean Winchester: All the reasons he’s the worst” & “Jungkook and Lisa? Could we see a romantic BTS and Blackpink collab?”, many people believe we’re not helping 2020.
To honor that, we have a collection of our best quotes from those who are less than satisfactory with Film Daily’s content.
“Hopefully, this will make you take time to realise that writing a bullsh!t hot take does not in fact make you a good writer, and that your biased opinion is blocking you from enjoying real art.”
“ Your website is an epic fail, or no, LEGENDARY FAIL!!!!! This website freaking sucks, and you can’t even judge a movie the right way! Hah! Filmdaily.co? More like nonsense.co!!!!!!🤣🤣🤣”
“Of course a failed writter bash one of the best directors of our times to get clicks, pretty petty IMO.”
Carole Baskin
Tiger King may have been about Joe Exotic, but Carole Baskin made herself the star of the show. That said, she made her fifteen-seconds of fame last way too long. Hot take, but we support Joe Exotic trying to do the world a favor and take Carole out, just like how she allegedly took her husband out.
Jeffree Star
Sometimes it’s best to stay off the internet, especially when YouTube drama commences. Beauty influencer Jeffree Star rose to popularity, but we’re left wondering why. Since MySpace was a thing (yeah, that long ago), Jeffree remained a controversial & disturbing character on social media.
Now, Jeffree’s past actions have come back to haunt him. A history of racism, sexual assault, and bullying – of course, Jeffree Star will forever be on our worst list! 🤡
Ansel Elgort
Elgort was one of the internet’s big crushes . . . then it came out in June that Ansel Elgort is nothing like his character in The Fault in Our Stars. Not only did he sexually abuse a minor, but he once described himself in an interview saying, “I’m, like, very threatening, I’m the most threatening guy ever.”
Apparently he keeps “weird nerdy” things in his room to trick women into thinking he’s safe – no really, he said that. Bye Ansel Elgort, we’re moving on to 2021, but leaving you in the dumpster fire that’s 2020.
J.K. Rowling
We’re not even mad at this point, just really disappointed she can’t keep her TERF mouth shut. It’s one thing to have an antiquated opinion, but to then double down & refuse to see another perspective is worse than spending detention with Umbridge. If we could just obliviate her from the public consciousness and have Harry Potter just exist on its own, we would. Thanks for ruining our childhoods, Jo.
Christopher Nolan
We don’t care that Tenet was a critical & box-office bomb. Christopher Nolan didn’t ask to be the savior of movie theaters, and it seems silly to resent him for having failed. However, Nolan truly fell from grace when he threw a tantrum over news that WB plans to do away with the theatrical window for its 2021 releases. His remarks came across as the cries of an old man upset because he may become slightly less wealthy in the future.
Jake Paul
The Paul Brothers have been two of the most obnoxious internet personalities for at least a couple of years. While Logan has certainly stirred the pot in the past, it’s Jake who takes “idiot brother of the year” in 2020. Jake has been consistently annoying for his larger-than-life ego & horrible music.
This year, Jake threw a party in the midst of a pandemic, and then in a later interview, called coronavirus a “hoax” & spewed more disinformation about the virus & the media. He also had legal trouble as he was charged for trespassing & unlawful assembly in Scottsdale, AZ during protests – the FBI even raided his house! It’s too bad he knocked out Nate Robinson because now we’re going to have to deal with his horrible ego until someone humbles him (KSI?).
Netflix
Due to COVID-19, a lot of series have gotten cancelled. No one was quite the TV Grim Reaper as Netflix. From reversing decisions of renewal for beloved series like G.L.O.W. to cancelling instantly popular series like I Am Not Okay With This, Netflix broke a lot of hearts in 2020, citing COVID-19 as a reason.
Well, you know what Netflix? You can’t blame every cancellation decision on the pandemic! Give us back our series and stop playing with our hearts!
Shane Dawson
We’d probably be here all day if we were going to list every single problematic thing Shane Dawson has been exposed for this past year, but we’ll make it quick. From the extremely racist commentary to the sick pedophilic “jokes” in old videos, the inappropriate things he’s said as a grown adult are inexcusable. It’s safe to say the Youtube community feels like way less of a toxic place without his content in it.
Ellen DeGeneres
Ellen took one embarrassing L after another in 2020. Her facade of kindness wilted like a dying flower after her employees accused her of mistreatment & verbal abuse. Ellen has tried to pretend like everything is normal, but her awkward dancing & faux charm has only furthered the idea she’s wildly out of touch with the rest of the world. This is one celebrity who should be canceled, literally & figuratively!
Kanye West
If politics in 2020 weren’t chaotic enough, Kanye West just had to cash in on his face-palming promise to run for president during his 2015 VMAs speech. Sure, he had no chance of success, but his sloppy attempt to grab the spotlight as a write-in candidate with his silly “Birthday Party” banner was the strain no one needed.
Not to mention, West couldn’t stop spewing endless bogus & fluff in 2020 like advocating for anti-vaxxers and shamelessly flexing about his billionaire bae, Kim Kardashian. Couldn’t you have just cut the nonsensical, tone-deaf, crap for one year, Kanye? Sheesh.
Clare Crawley
The casting of thirty-nine-year-old Clare Crawley was a bright spot for many Bachelorette fans, as many were finally ready to see a mature woman take the reins of this popular dating show. Crawley was clearly ready for a serious relationship. . . we just didn’t know she was THAT serious!
Crawley’s run as the Bachelorette lasted about as short as her patience with men who tried complimenting her, sending home multiple suitors for the mere act of, gasp, chivalry. No one stood a chance against Crawley’s now fiance Dale Moss, and Crawley certainly didn’t do a good job of hiding it, either.
Amber Heard
It started with Amber Heard allegedly cheating on one of the most successful actors in Hollywood back in 2018. Now after the worst gender based violence abuse case in history, Warner Bros. has decided to keep Heard in the Aquaman sequel. We don’t know what is more disappointing, Johnny Depp being removed from Fantastic Beasts or that Heard gets to walk away with another film in the new desired role, ‘the victim’.
Quentin Tarantino
Tarantino is one of those people who managed to really disappoint us, even though the accusations weren’t shocking at all. Quentin Tarantino is one of those privileged white males who seems to have normalized abuse and replicated it in his work environment. When will directors (and everyone for that matter) learn women don’t need to be diminished in order to be made stronger?
Who could ever see Uma Thurman and think “you know what, she needs me to spit in her face to deliver the performance needed for this role”? She’s already a strong woman, a great actress, and a role model. But it’s probably not a surprise that Quentin would behave like this when he still entertains the thought that a thirteen-year-old is capable of consenting to sex.
