Everything you need to know about Hulu’s ‘High Fidelity’
If you’re suffering through one of your “Desert Island Top 5 Breakups” or just are single this Valentine’s Day, then we suggest that you check out Hulu’s High Fidelity. Based on the popular Nick Hornby novel of the same (also a 1995 movie starring John Cusack and a Broadway musical), High Fidelity follows the owner of the “last real record store on earth” as he tries to figure out why all his relationships end up in flames by going meeting the five people that inspired the greatest breakups in his life.
Hulu’s adaptation of High Fidelity will largely have the same story, but with a few key changes. To prepare yourself for the series release in a few weeks, here’s everything we know about High Fidelity.
The cast
Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) plays the lead character of Rob in Hulu’s adaptation of High Fidelity. That’s right we have a gender-swapped role going on here. Rather than a straight white male of the book, the movie, and the musical, Kravitz’s Rob is a young black bisexual woman with the same cynical and sarcastic edge of other iterations of the character. Kravitz also serves as an executive producer on the project.
In addition to the future Catwoman, other cast includes Jake Lacy (Fosse/Verdon) as Clyde, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Dolemite Is My Name) as Cherise, David Holmes (Mr. Robot) as Simon, and Kingsley Ben-Adir (The OA) as Russell “Mac” McCormack.
The plot
Per the Hulu press site, High Fidelity follows “Rob Brooks (Zoë Kravitz, who also serves as an executive producer), a female record store owner in the rapidly gentrified neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn who revisits past relationships through music and pop culture, while trying to get over her one true love.”
It sounds like it will be pretty close to the book although it was Rob Fleming and set in London. The 1995 film saw the plot move to Chicago and the 2006 musical set the story in Brooklyn.
The original novel follows Rob Fleming, whose girlfriend Laura breaks-up with him due to his fear of commitment, as he meets with the ghosts of his “Desert Island Top Five All Time Breakups” that utterly wrecked him in order to figure out where his relationships go wrong. On the journey, there’s a lot of music, sarcastic cynicism, and some serious soul-searching as Rob tries to win back Laura and commit to her.
Hulu’s High Fidelity will follow the same basic story, but also take things in some new and interesting directions. Kravitz even said they left things open a little bit, in case Hulu wants a future season of the series.
When will it be out?
High Fidelity will have a 10-episode season that will all drop on Hulu on Friday, Feb. 14 aka Valentine’s Day. So if you’re going through the wreckage of a breakup, still single, or just want an adaptation of a classic rom-com to watch, then head to Hulu and check it out.
