Karen memes have inspired a movie: Everything to know
Some of the Karen stories online feel like they belong in a horror movie, as the women and men terrorizing people of color or poor retail employees get violent and almost feel like serial killers. So it’s no surprise that someone in Hollywood is finally trying to cash in on the Karen memes to make a movie.
Karen is the movie based on actual Karens that we’ve been waiting for. This crime thriller isn’t technically based on any particular incident involving a Karen, but it feels like something we could see on Twitter tomorrow.
Life imitates art
According to TMZ, the plot of Karen will focus on a “racist, entitled white woman in the South who terrorizes her new African-American neighbors.” Her goal is to get the new family to move out no matter what it takes. So you know she’s about the be a literal neighbor from hell.
We’ll have to see if the plot reflects any of the various real-life Karens we’ve seen over the past few months on social media. But the plot of Karen really sounds like a true Karen so far.
Pennsatucky steps up her Karen behavior
If you’ve seen Orange is the New Black, you know Taryn Manning can play a good Karen. Pennsatucky was the definition of a Karen back in the beginning of the show. It’s not surprising she was tapped to play the menacing Karen White looking to scare her neighbors out of their home.
And in case Karen trying to scare her black neighbors out of her predominantly white neighborhood wasn’t racist enough for you, apparently, the neighbors are strong, vocal supporters of Black Lives Matter too.
An explicit film
Don’t expect Karen to be the kind of movie for the whole family. Director and writer Coke Daniels is well known for his hard R rated comedy style, with past films including Highway and Hollywont. We can’t see him trying to change that up yet, even if Karen is more thriller than comedy.
A dead meme?
The real question is: Will Karen memes still be popular by the time Karen comes out? Karen is just entering pre-production, so it will be at least a year before we’ll get to see the new movie. We’d love to think we’ll live in a Karen-less world by then, but we can’t imagine people will have learned to behave and stop being racist by 2021.
