Love ‘Firefly’? Participate in our fan film
While we have long let go of the dream for Joss Whedon and the Serenity crew to return for further seasons of Firefly, that doesn’t mean we’ve moved on from the series. Firefly is the preeminent example of a show that got the ax well before its time, and fans of the show never had a fighting chance to share why it deserved more.
Back in 2003 when the drama emerged that the sci-fi western was canceled, MySpace was still social media king and Twitter was but a twinkling in @jack’s eye; fans had little to no voice in changing a network’s mind.
In the spirit of showing the next generation one of the best shows of the century so far, we’ve decided to make a fan film of what made Firefly so great. Maybe we can inspire Joss Whedon’s next project through our love letter (or rather, video) to Firefly.
What made Firefly so amazing?
Firefly brought everything to the table: clever characters, unique argot, offbeat style, and wry humor. Fans instantly felt like they were part of their own peculiar club as the show developed its own inside jokes.
Firefly managed to develop a following even as reality television was taking over the airwaves, standing out for its brisk pacing and quirky concepts. Fans of the show never felt the scripts were dumbed down – the banter and concepts played to their intelligence, instead.
Firefly also mark’s the world falling in love with its star, Nathan Fillion. While it wasn’t his first show, it was definitely Fillion’s most iconic; he has called Firefly the best acting job he’s ever had. He was the perfect embodiment of Captain Mal Richards, the cunning and capable owner and captain of the series’s ship, Serenity. Ask any Firefly fan: Nathan Fillion made the show.
So we’re making a Firefly tribute?
Despite being canceled over 15 years ago, Firefly still inspires fans to rave about the show and periodically rewatch all fourteen episodes and the subsequent feature Serenity. Firefly’s anti-government vibe is still relevant and engaging, along with lovably flawed characters who draw the audience in. We always want to celebrate quality binge-worthy television.
Film Daily has been gathering up fan videos so that networks can feel the love their audiences hold for shows that have been victims of a premature cancellation. However, we still feel fans never got the chance to share their love for Firefly in a meaningful way – so we decided to invite fans to celebrate their love for Firefly, just for fun.
