Could multiple Emmy nominations save ‘Lovecraft Country”s season 2?
With a vast fanbase, many are wondering why in the world was Lovecraft Country cancelled? Countless fans didn’t even question whether or not the hit show would receive a second season because of its obvious success. Unfortunately, HBO recently revealed that Lovecraft Country would not return with a season 2.
As the 2021 Emmy nominations have just been revealed, it’s become even clearer that the series deserved so much better from HBO. With a total of seven Emmy nominations and a massive following, does Lovecraft Country have a chance of a revival?
Lovecraft Country’s groundbreaking story
The 2020 show follows a young Black man, Atticus Freeman who searches for his missing father on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America. Alongside his friend Letitia & his Uncle George, the trio is confronted by both racist horror and disturbing monsters.
Mixing both racial social commentary & Lovecraftian fright, the HBO series easily acquired an extensive fanbase. Many viewers were also pleased to discover that the series’ showrunner Misha Green is a woman of color, giving Lovecraft Country’s racial commentary actual sincerity.
Green had even worked on the script for season 2 so that when it was approved by HBO the show could swiftly start production. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. To everyone’s surprise, Lovecraft Country was cancelled before season 2 could hit the screen.
Raking in the Emmy nominations
Less surprising is that the beloved show received seven Emmy nominations. Lead actress Jurnee Smollet has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Additionally, Jonathan Major & Michael K. Williams have been nominated for Best Actor & Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, respectively.
Aunjanue Ellis has also been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Meanwhile, Courtney B. Vance has snagged a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
Apart from acting nominations, Lovecraft Country has received nominations for both Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series & Best Drama Series. It’s clear to see that both fans & critics alike were well aware of the show’s talent.
Will Lovecraft Country thrive outside of HBO?
It’s been revealed that writer, director, and producer Misha Green has signed an exclusive deal with Apple +. Green will now be creating & developing new television series exclusively for Apple’s TV streaming platform.
It seems unlikely that Lovecraft Country will be making Apple + its new home. For now, it has only been detailed that Green will be making brand new content for Apple rather than reviving the hit series with a season 2.
While this may be disappointing for many, at least fans can expect much more content from Misha Green. The director is set to write/direct an upcoming Tomb Raider sequel which will mark her directorial film debut. Additionally, Green is also reported to be producing two new films including The Mother, a thriller starring Jennifer Lopez. The second film is said to be a remake of the 1973 Cleopatra Jones.
Misha Green’s contemporary take on Lovecraftian horror
Even if we won’t be seeing a Lovecraft Country season 2, we can still appreciate the genius which is Misha Green’s storytelling. Green once explained, “You know, being an ‘other’ in this world, you’re walking around in a horror movie at all times, you’re always on edge and wondering when the monster is going to jump out and get you. I feel like that’s the experience of African-Americans and queer people in America.”
This feeling of being in a world of fear & terror was perfectly seen in the genre-bending HBO series. As the writer once described, “In horror, there’s a level of anxiety that your life can be taken at any moment. That’s the Black experience.”
