No studio needed: These Pilates workouts are perfect at home
Pilates is an excellent form of exercise that can be done anywhere, anytime. It’s low impact and emphasizes lengthening the body and developing strength through controlled, precise movements. With just a few simple tools, you can create a complete Pilates routine right in your own living room! Here are some of the best Pilates workouts you can do from the comfort of your own home.
Core Strengthening Routine
Focus: Core Strength
Equipment Needed: Yoga mat, a yoga block (optional)
Instructions:
Begin in a seated position with your feet flat on the floor and your core engaged. Take a deep breath and relax into sitting tall as you exhale.
Curl up into a “V-sit” position by bringing your legs up so they form a 90-degree angle with your torso and keep them slightly bent at the knees to protect your lower back. To add extra core work, place both hands behind your head for added resistance as you engage in this pose for 10 breaths or 30 seconds – whichever feels more comfortable for you.
From here, extend one leg out long while keeping the other bent and tucked close to your torso. Make sure not to arch or tilt your pelvis too much and hold this extended leg out while actively pressing down against it with the bottom of the opposite foot to initiate hamstring engagement – hold for 10 breaths or 30 seconds before switching legs and repeating on the other side.
For the next exercise, shift onto all fours with your wrists directly underneath your shoulders and knees directly underneath your hips in what’s known as tabletop position (or “T-position”). Keep your core tight throughout this whole movement and slowly extend one arm forward until it’s parallel to the ground, tucking both shoulders away from each ear. Once extended, maintain this very same distance between both arms throughout all repetitions so that core engagement remains steady – aim for 10 reps per side if possible before returning to starting position again by shifting back into the T-position.
Next, come up onto both feet while still maintaining an engaged core as you prepare yourself for front planks – make sure not to lock out either elbow so that there is still enough space when drawing them closer to each chest level during each repetition here; hold for 5 breaths for 15 seconds before releasing slowly back down into T-position once more time for another round of plank holds (if desired).
Finally comes bridge pose! Lie supine on a yoga mat with feet flat on the floor, heels near buttocks; 10 reps per side should suffice here (making sure not to hyperextend any joint), aiming to keep movements slow but controlled throughout all repetitions – after completing all sets as desired feel free to rest by lying in savasana for 2 minutes or more before standing taller yet again at end of the session for final relaxation in mountain pose (arms above the head if desired!). Enjoy!
