When can we expect more episodes of ‘Rick and Morty’? Meet the new cast
It’s almost time to get schwifty. A new episode of Rick and Morty will air on Adult Swim on June 20th, kicking off the show’s fifth season. Back in 2018, Rick and Morty was renewed for seventy episodes. So far, ten of those have aired, and season 5 will bring out ten more.
Rick and Morty, created by Justin Roiland & Dan Harmon, has been on the air since 2013. Both creators are currently working on other animated series along with Rick and Morty. Harmon, best known for creating & producing the NBC sitcom Community, has Krapopolis coming to Fox later this year. Roiland’s Solar Opposites just finished its second season on Hulu.
On their own, both Roiland & Harmon are incredibly talented writers, but when they combine their efforts, something special gets made. Rick and Morty follows the misadventures of Rick Sanchez, a nearly omniscient mad scientist figure, and his naive grandson Morty. Roiland voices both of the titular characters, but Rick and Morty is well known for bringing in a wide assortment of celebrity guests.
Previous seasons of the show have borrowed the talents of John Oliver, Christian Slater, Patton Oswalt, and Werner Herzog. Season 5 will show off a new batch of guest stars, and you can catch up on all the details right here before Rick and Morty kicks off with a new episode later this month.
New talent
Spencer Grammer, who plays Morty’s sister Summer in the show, recently confirmed at least three different guest stars coming to season 5. She said Timothy Olyphant, Christina Ricci and Alison Brie will each be in a new Rick and Morty episode sometime during the season, but she didn’t say anything about who the actors would be playing or whether they’d all appear together.
Timothy Olyphant has dozens of acting credits to his name. He’s starred in hit shows like Justified and Deadwood. Christina Ricci has made a name for herself playing darkly quirky characters like Wednesday Addams in 1991’s The Addams Family and 1993’s Addams Family Values. Alison Brie has previously worked with Dan Harmon, starring as perfectionist student Annie in his show Community.
Two years ago Justin Roiland & Dan Harmon publicly offered Kanye West the chance to have full creative control over a new Rick and Morty episode after the rapper proclaimed his love of the show online. Many fans were hopeful that West would make an appearance in season 5. The Rick and Morty team has confirmed that won’t be happening, but they said, “Never say never”.
Old faces
Along with all the new talent, Rick and Morty season 5 will see the return of many old faces. The entire Smith family will be back in action. Harmon has said this season features many plots that involve the family working together.
In addition to the Smiths, fan-favorite Dr. Wong, voiced by Susan Sarandon, will be making a grand return. The family therapist and “poop eating specialist” previously appeared in the season 3 episode “Pickle Rick”. Her interaction with the Smith family, and Rick in particular, remains one of the strongest scenes in the entire series. We can only hope that Dr. Wong will be making more than just a simple cameo.
The first episode of the new Rick and Morty season is titled “Mort Dinner Rick Andre”. It will be the first check-in with the Smith/Sanchez family since the dramatic events of the season 4 finale “Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri”, which ended with Rick’s relationship to the rest of his family up in the air. Adult Swim will air the episode on Sunday, June 20th, so get your szechuan sauce ready.
