‘Sanditon’ fans are determined: Why they want a second season, part 2
Fandoms can be a force to be reckoned with, and the Sanditon fandom is no different. From thoughtful characters to wonderful acting, we’ve fallen in love with the PBS show, and we’ll fight for it. We are determined to see this great show get another season, so our beloved Jane Austen characters can have their happy endings.
We’ve already written one article with explanations from fans on why they felt the show’s ending was abhorrent, and thus why the show needs a second season. However, this fanbase is a dedicated one, and they have since made so many more wonderful points on why the show deserves its happily ever after, we’ve put together another collection of their tweets.
Life is hectic
Let’s face it, the world isn’t a very fun place sometimes, and right now it’s pretty scary. Sanditon allows for escapism into a world where the biggest concerns are whether you’re falling in love or if a new seaside town can be built.
A powerful show
It’s hard to believe PBS can ignore the rallying cry of so many people stretched across the globe asking for more of their show. Especially since we aren’t asking for five more seasons and a movie, we’re asking for one more season to finish the story properly.
A beginning, a middle . . . and a, uh . . . ?
Storytelling 101 teaches everyone a story needs a beginning, a middle, and an end. At the moment Sanditon is left smack dab in the middle.
A cool breeze
Just look at a history book, you must enjoy the small things and celebrate what you can in the face of difficult historical events. Sanditon has become one of those things for many people, and the simple hope of seeing a happy ending is a driving force for many.
True dedication
This exchange on Twitter is by two roleplaying accounts, who are acting as the characters Tom and Mary Parker. The fans are so invested in the story and the characters, some of them are becoming them in their time off. It’s truly a sweet and heartwarming thing to behold.
Not to mention, you can practically hear the characters when you read these tweets.
Unfair
We’ve all heard “life isn’t fair”, but you know what? This doesn’t mean our stories have to be unfair too. Stories are supposed to be karmic, the bad people are punished, and the good are rewarded. As of the ending of season one, the story is almost completely unbalanced – with the only exception being Esther’s happy ending.
Money over all else? 💰
Sure, Sidney is getting married for money to save his brother from bankruptcy, but he is still marrying for money. This is entirely against Jane Austen’s own values.
A remarkable show
This show has spoken to some in ways a show never has before – it has incited a passion they didn’t know they had for television stories. Some people even tweeted saying they made a Twitter account solely for the purpose of advocating for Sanditon to get another season.
Austen’s other works
Even people who aren’t ardent fans of Jane Austen know the story of Pride and Prejudice, and it’s pretty safe to bet the idea of Lizzie and Darcy not getting together, even for them, would be gutting.
A modern period piece
A careful balance of the past and the present has made a timeless story even more relevant and relatable to today’s audiences.
True love
You know it’s true love when you didn’t mean to fall in love, but here you are head over heels. In fact, it’s the exact same way Charlotte fell in love.
—
The world is a mixed up, messed up place, but it doesn’t mean our stories have to be too. If PBS won’t finish their story, then maybe someone else can. Whoever finishes it will surely benefit. If you look back at all these screenshots almost every single person has changed their username and profile picture to be Sanditon related.
They’ve changed their online identities in order to keep fighting for the show. It may seem a simple act, but it’s a powerful one.

I agree with the sentiment behind the charge for a Sanditon Season two…we the viewers have been cheated of an Austen ending! Jane said her characters would have obstacles to overcome before finding happiness, so be it. Let Charlotte and Sidney get their HEA. The world will be a happier place and Austen honoured properly!

Another great article in support of this amazing series! Thank you for using my tweet. This show really is an escape for me. Not only in watching it but also in fighting for it. I am so grateful to have found the Sanditon Sisterhood! I have never been part of a fandom before, but this series was too good to just let go. I truly love coming onto Twitter and interacting with others that share the same passion for this show. It has brought me joy and laughter at a time when it has been much needed! Thank you again for your support!

I am a longtime supporter of our local PBS station in the SE Pennsylvania region. Masterpiece is one of the jewels. I am so disappointed with the ending, the truely heart breaking ending, of Sanditon. While I am not sure that the story has enough power to support a full second season, I certainly believe that at least one or two more episodes are needed to bring this story to a proper closure. It could have been accomplished in the first eight episodes, but the writers chose to extend it for a season two, and have caused quite a mess now that the show has not been renewed. It is hard to fathom that the writers and broadcasters didn’t see , from the get go, that this particular piece might not have the audience needed to fund the work. In any event, the story needs to be brought to a proper, Jane Austen, conclusion. Sidney and Charlotte must be reunited for their happily ever after. Patrons of Masterpiece deserve an ending worthy of the their well earned reputation.

Thank you for this beautifully written article! It captures the dedication of the Sanditon Sisterhood to fight for a season 2! We WANT another season so bad! I am very grateful that I have made thousands of new friends all over the world through this sisterhood! I have never been a part of a fandom before Sanditon, but I couldn’t let this series go away. It is that good and worth fighting for, and I keep coming back to it every day. It is so fun to go onto twitter every day and interact with all my sisters knowing that we have a common passion for the show and a common goal in mind to get Sanditon Season 2. It is the right thing to do to bring Sanditon back for season 2 and it is what Jane Austen would want. Give us our HEA!

They could just do a 2 hours spécial or a film to make a follow up and a real and liveable end if they can’t make a second season…

Oh my, so well said. How about a fourth ball, and all the women wear blue shoes. How about Sir Edward really gets his come-upance, but Clara Brereton is seen as the survivor of incest and abuse that she is; how about Tom Parker putting in his own oar to manage his money wisely; how about we learn something of Mrs. Campion’s life, get her settled with a socially-upward dandy from London so she can live the high life of society she loves; how about Lady Susan and Charlotte triumphing over it all. The women in this story are just so brilliant, outspoken, far-sighted, learn-from-their-mistakes, maturing, “I will not be someone’s property” aware. Sidney turned himself into a slave for a marriage of money, to save the family from financial ruin. We are all angry as spit that Tom Parker seems to come out golden, paying no price nor even realizing the price his salvation cost Sidney. Even Fred and Young Stringer are characters we root for over and over. There is not one stitch slipped in this production.

Thousands here in the United States love Sanditon. I recommend it to everyone. Please ask PBS and Masterpiece theater to come up with the funding for a second season, or please propose and convince Amazon prime video or Netflix to do it. We need closure to this beautiful and remarkable story. Please.

This beautiful story Sanditon has captured the hearts of so many. The characters come alive in a way that makes you want to know what happens to ALL of them. And we must have a happy ending for the heroine, just the way Jane Austen would have wanted. There is no question of the need of a Season 2.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so wrapped by a series that I could watch it over and over again. If ever I’m a bit fed up, which can happen in these trying times, I’ll either start with episode one and work my way through. Or I’ll pick one of my favourite episodes. You see I got hold of the DVD of Santidon the minute it was available. Sometimes I don’t play all of the last episode, but GOT to see the kiss. I just COULD NOT believe that ending. I was sure he’d changed his mind when he intercepted Charlotte leaving

May 22, 2020LOVE, LOVE Sanditon. Yes, I agree with ALL the other viewers that love the show – going through all of the emotions and ending with nothing is VERY disappointing.

I do not know how many times I have watched Sanditon, which is embarassing. There have been so many other shows that did not deserve a second season, that could have ended with only 1 season and the story would have been complete. Sanditon, however is not complete. Had it ended with Sidney proposing and Charlotte saying yes, That even, would have been enough for me. A second season would not have been so needed. I didn’t even need to see the actual wedding. Figuring out how Tom saved the development of Sanditon and wondering what happened to Georgiana and Edward could have been left to our imaginations. It would have been fine to leave all of that and hanging in the balance . I just watched Belgravia, which by the way I could barely watch since I hated almost all of the characters , and Beecham House. The writers were clever and insightful enough that a second season would be good, but if there is no second season, the first season of both of those shows was enough to end on. But Andrew Davies… not so clever. Do Austen’s story justice and finish it!

One of the few good things in early 2020 was Sanditon on PBS….then came the virus and all the subsequent disturbing news. We all need some good positive news….how about at least one ( if not more) seasons of Sanditon. That would bring a smile to many faces…and would be most welcomed.

We absolutely need a season 2!!! I check out a segment almost daily, though I think the nudity is unnecessary. If they added season 2, the sales would soar. I’m not interested in buying a movie with such a sad ending. There are possibilities for resolving the conflicts through Susan’s influence or Miss Lamb’s fortune, It would be interesting to go back to Sidney’s time on the island to see the conflicts he faced and how he ended up as Miss Lamb’s guardian. Let’s meet Susan’s prince. There are so many subplots to explore. If they don’t do a second series, someone should write a book. It could even be like a Choose Your Own Adventure format with all sorts of possible twists and turns. If it became a best seller, someone would certainly make a movie of it.
