The ‘Sanditon’ story’s not over yet: Why it needs a 2021 renewal
Sanditon, which aired on PBS Masterpiece Theatre in the US, is in desperate need of a second season. With its UK home channel, ITV, declining a second season, fans are desperately and valiantly looking for a new home for the needed second season of Sanditon, better known to English lit nerds as Jane Austen’s unfinished novel.
Brought to life by Andrew Davies (House of Cards), Sanditon follows Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) who goes to the small seaside resort town of Sanditon. She gets drawn into the web of secrets and schemes of the town inhabitants, especially that of the Parker family and the frustrating Sidney Parker (Theo James).
After an eight-episode first season, ITV elected not to renew Sanditon for a second season. Given that the first season ended on a cliffhanger with Sidney admitting his love for Charlotte, but agreeing to marry the wealthy Eliza (Ruth Kearney) to help his family’s fortunes.
Seeing as how that’s not really how Jane Austen’s stories ended, fans are desperate for someone to pick up the second season to end the story properly. Here are a couple reasons why Sanditon needs to be saved.
To be true to Jane Austen
Jane Austen died with only 11 chapters of Sanditon written. Davies and his team have clearly tried to keep an Austen like spirit in bringing it to the screen. As any fan of Austen worth their salt will tell you, it’s not a Jane Austen story without a happy ending. By a happy ending, we mean that Sidney and Charlotte end together in some fashion.
After all, Sidney and Charlotte deserve the same happy end as Elizabeth and Darcy, right? Since Austen couldn’t complete her novel, then don’t we owe it to her to see it completed in some format? With a happy ending between the lovers and all’s well in the end?
Charlotte and Sidney forever, seriously
Fans have been swooning over the slow burn romance of Charlotte and Sidney from the word go. The two truly make a spectacular team together and the chemistry between Williams and James is just off the chart. Everyone cried out when the two admitted their love, but Sidney still went to Eliza because of his duty.
How will they end up together in the end? What is the plan to bring these two who are so perfect for each other together? Sanditon may have had an ending, but it’s not the ending that the show’s creators nor the fans want for it. Even if a place just picks it up for a wrap up movie or something, it deserves to end for the sake of the characters.
Hope triumphs
Finally, in these difficult times, we have to admit that the Sanditon ending showed be done in order for a more hopeful conclusion. Yes, the cliffhanger was a sad one to witness, but, as we said, Austen’s stories are full of love and hope. In these times, hope should be at the forefront of the media being put out.
The reason that Sanditon should be saved is that it’s a period drama that could add a bit more of that Austen belief in love and happy endings in the world. The ending with Sidney and Charlotte together deserves to be told to give people who love the series so much that bright spot that they deserve.

Thank you so much for continuing to keep the outstanding Sanditon series in the spotlight! It is absolutely deserving of a second season! Brilliant cast, gorgeous scenery and a magnificent storyline are just a few of the reasons to produce season 2. I challenge anyone that truly loves Jane Austen to watch the series and not find yourself demanding more episodes.

This is the first show I have loved this quickly this much in awhile! The casting was spot on as the group have such a chemistry they are like family! The acting is great and the romance is off the charts! We need to see the rest of this story please renew Sanditon for season 2 and beyond for a million seasons!!! SIDLOTTE NEEDS A HAPPY ENDING!!!!

I think you left out several important reasons for a season 2. A big deal was made of the heiress Miss Lamb-so what happens to her? Sidney’s brother Tom was incapable of managing or acquiring funds – you truly think an influx of funds will solve this narcissistic loon’s issues? What about this loveless arrangement? You think it will last? Will young Mr. Springer pursue our Charlotte? I can go on but I do know that Jane Austin would not leave this story unfinished!

I agree that Sanditon needs a wrap up. I had never watched any of Downton Abbey but saw the movie. I loved the movie. I now will go back to binge watch the series. If we can’t have a series, then a movie to wrap up the loose ends would be great. We, the fans, need closure for Charlotte and Sidney!

With the lack of good television in the u.s. and the popularity of period drama like poldark, Downton abbey, and even reign and game of thrones, it seems that with as many characters and storylines that have been introduced in sanditon that the show could easily go for more than a 2 season’s. With careful scheduling, chacter a tors could even be involved with other projects, giving ingredients other characters and storylines a chance to shine. The georgiana Lambe story and connection tion to slavery would be very compelling and even has potential for some educational value.

I love Sanditon and have watched it more than I have ever watched any Series in my Life. We need another Series or a full length movie for closure. The acting is so good with the chemistry between Charlotte and Sydney so realistic.. what a waste to end it like it did.

Sydney holds his feelings close to his chest but eventually succumbs to our sweet sensible Charlotte who despite her love realizes his decision must be for all…She returns home but misses her new Friends …so upon an urgent request from the Parker’s ( a sudden illness perhaps ) Charlotte returns with her Sister ( who may become a new love attachment for Mr. Stringer ) A chance encounter with Sydney stirs new forbidden feelings but both lovers know that the hopelessness and scandal would forever tarnish their love ..until a fatal riding incident and /or Wife’s betrayal opens the path to happiness….

I was very, very upset with the ending that I called in to wttw and told them, I would not support them! I’ve never done something like this before. I’m a fan of Jane Austin and the way the movie ended was a shock that I haven’t experienced before. Jane Austin would never write an ending like that. Never!

I love this story Sandleton. I Ive watched it four times already, But last night March 20, 2022 I was very disappointed that Sidney Parker would not be coming back as I feel he really loved Charlette.
I did read that he was not returning and soo disappointed as I could picture something happening
