‘Snowpiercer’ finally released the season 2 trailer: Everything to know

TNT’s series Snowpiercer is a new take on the namesake movie, which is based on the sci-fi novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has killed most of humanity.

Although the story has been brought to the screen before, we finally get to see a more in-depth exploration in Snowpiercer. However, in the series, we get to follow the lives of Melanie Cavill, Andre Layton, Bess Francis Till, Ruth Wardell, and other characters who aren’t part of the original novel.

If you’ve been following the Snowpiercer series, you’ve probably been waiting for the new season after the first one left us all at the edge of our seats. Luckily, the trailer for season 2 is finally here! Check out everything we know about the new season.

Snowpiercer’s general premise

In Snowpiercer season 1, we’re introduced to a post-apocalyptic world set after Earth goes through a global warming crisis. Humanity tries to reverse its effects but creates another ice age instead. As a response, a train in perpetual motion was created to shelter survivors from the extreme weather.

The train is called Snowpiercer and its different wagons serve to separate people by class. This means that the closer someone is to the front wagon, the richer they are. The story focuses on trying to criticize segregation & class division.

TNT’s Snowpiercer, which is broadcasted on Netflix too, takes place seven years after the ice age began. In the first season, we learn that the 1001-wagon-train was built by the multimillionaire, Mr. Wilford.

Due to segregation and the marked differences between wagons, passengers at the end of the train (called “Tailies”) start planning a revolt. Meanwhile, one of the Tailies & former homicide detective, Andre Layton, is called by the Voice of the Train, Melanie Cavill, to help solve a murder mystery.

During the season we mostly follow the characters as they attempt to revolt against class division – at the same time, we unveil who’s behind the murders. Snowpiercer season 1 also gets into the technical difficulties of maintaining the train. As the revolution progresses, the richer classes are forced to give out control of the train as they realize they cannot get rid of the tailies because they depend on them.

However, some wagons are decoupled from the rest of the train which arguably is the same as killing those passengers. Layton himself decides to decouple a train filled with his friends and learns that taking control of the train comes with facing tough decisions.

During the last episodes, we see Mr. Wilford is still alive, and he’s on a train that catches up to the one we’ve been following. As both trains are connected, we also see Melanie’s daughter, who confronts her mother Melanie for leaving her behind.

New trailer & theories

The last episodes of Snowpiercer season 1 left us with some questions which most fans are hoping will be addressed in season 2. For instance, we’re still unsure if the events of the series are going to be tied up to the movie in some way.

In the original novel, there’s a second train called Ice Breaker which is boarded by passengers of the Snowpiercer in an attempt to escape from a virus. During season 1, we saw a second train – Mr. Willford’s – which might suggest there are more trains like Snowpiercer. Although we don’t know if the virus plot will be brought to the series, we might see more trains and the communications between them.

In the season 2 trailer, we see Mr. Willford again, so we’re guessing the new episodes will get into his conflict with Melanie. In the trailer, Mr. Wilford asks Melanie to surrender the train to him to which she replies “she’s not mine to surrender”, just as we cut into a scene featuring Layton who’s informing the train about Mr. Willford’s train being latched together with the Snowpiercer.

The new season will also focus on Melanie’s relationship with her daughter, Alex. In the trailer, we see Alex confronting Melanie about leaving her behind. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about how Alex ended up on Mr. Willford’s train.

What’s more exciting is that we’re going to see action outside of the train as it seems there’s hope to recolonize the planet. The trailer suggests Melanie will be exploring the outside world which will probably make for an interesting twist.
