‘Sweet Magnolias’ on Netflix: Why it’s your next quarantine bingewatch
With everything going on in the world people are searching, now more than ever, for escapism into happy worlds with good characters so they can forget whatever troubles them. If you’re one of those people, or just someone who is looking for their next TV obsession, then you need to know about Sweet Magnolias.
The show is about three women, Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley) who are close friends from the south. Maddie is getting a divorce and needs a new start so the three women decide to fulfill their lifelong dream of starting a business together.
From the trailer alone you can tell this show has heart, here are all the reasons you must binge this show immediately.
Strong female leads
The show is all about women, and their characters are full of heart. Their struggles are real, and it’s hard not to fall in love with all of them immediately. Not to mention, the show is produced by another strong woman, Sheryl J. Anderson. The most widely recognized TV series Anderson has produced is the original Charmed. So it’s clear she knows how to lead a show with great ladies at the helm.
Hallmark without being campy
Hallmark movies are fun when you’re in the right mood. They’re usually sickly sweet, have happy endings, and the actors are normally pretty easy on the eyes. However, Hallmark movies can also feel really cheesy.
Sweet Magnolias has all the best parts of a Hallmark movie without the cringey campiness. No awkward dialogue or forced scenes, partially because Netflix has a bigger budget, and partially because with ten episodes there’s more time to flesh everything out.
Plus, Sweet Magnolias is a Netflix series – which means no commercials either!
The return of Jamie Lynn Spears
If you’re a pop culture aficionado or a die hard fan of the Spears family then it’s worth noting that Jamie Lynn Spears has come back to the world of acting. Her last acting credit was as the star of the Nickelodeon show Zoey 101 which ended in 2008.
However, Jamie Lynn Spears has apparently returned from acting retirement because she’s in all ten episodes of Sweet Magnolias.
Warming the coldest parts of your heart
The show has romance elements, strong friendships, family struggles, and optimism. The show will feel like a warm embrace you will never want to leave. Sweet Magnolias is the type of kindness we need in the world right now and it more than deserves a bingewatch.
