Is Ellen DeGeneres to blame for her show’s toxicity? Ex-staff says “yes”
The investigation into the toxic workplace that is The Ellen DeGeneres Show has wrapped up. With it, three producers have been fired for their actions by WarnerMedia. Ellen has also pledged to improve workplace conditions when they go back to a regular filming schedule. Still, however, many people wonder just how complicit Ellen really was in letting the workplace get that bad.
In the original Buzzfeed News article that kickstarted the scandal, the current and ex-staff members said that Ellen didn’t do anything with the toxic workplace culture. On the other, she also didn’t do anything to stop how bad the behind-the-scenes got on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. After all, the boss sets the tone for the series. Ellen has enough mean acts that have been shared as well.
But is Ellen DeGeneres to blame for the show’s toxicity? Really? Well, some ex-staff are saying “yes”. Here’s why.
Lack of involvement
After news of the investigation broke, The Sun went to current and former The Ellen DeGeneres Show staff, who said that Ellen could have done more to make the environment on the show better. Due to her lack of involvement, things festered so to speak.
“If she wants to have her own show and have her name on the show title, she needs to be more involved to see what’s going on. I think the executive producers surround her and tell her, ‘Things are going great, everybody’s happy,’ and she just believes that, but it’s her responsibility to go beyond that.”
Other complaints
Other employees have also said that Ellen presents an image on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, but it’s very different when the cameras are off. In fact, many that talked to The Sun said that Ellen was more concerned with protecting her image over anything else. This backfired horribly as people learned that her “be kind” mantra was a load of bull.
Unfortunately, Ellen’s outing as two-faced has people side-eyeing her apology and promises to change. Hopefully, there will be some kind of oversight when the crew gets back to work on the set of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. So will anything come out of her promises?
With the media attention and staff willing to talk with the press, we can hope that these changes will be implemented and Ellen will actually take more of a leadership role on the show. But, as staff pointed out, this is something Ellen should have been doing from the beginning.
What happens if things don’t change?
If things don’t change, then it’s more than likely that The Ellen DeGeneres Show will be canceled. There have been rumors swirling around since July of this year that the show will be canceled. Either way, the scrutiny around Ellen DeGeneres probably isn’t going away any soon. It’s up to her to change her actions.
