The most bingeworthy projects from ‘Parks and Recreation’ stars
If you find yourself constantly pining for the waffle-loving wisdom of Leslie Knope and the unparalleled comedic talents of actor Amy Poehler, then Netflix’s new movie will have you living. Poehler’s directorial feature debut, Wine Country, has premiered on the streaming service with an all-star cast featuring some of the funniest women in the industry.
As well as starring Poehler – who also produced the movie – Wine Country will feature Tina Fey (30 Rock), Maya Rudolph (Inherent Vice), Rachel Dratch (Click), Ana Gasteyer (That’s My Boy), and Emily Spivey (a former Parks and Recreation writer who also penned the movie script). Telling the story of a pack of old buddies who go to Napa for a weekend getaway to celebrate a 50th birthday, we’re already pretty hyped about the movie.
But just in case you need more convincing (you maniac), the Wine Country announcement teaser released by Netflix showcases the movie’s stars enjoying a musical moment together, featuring 100% of your RDA of joy.
As you’re likely well aware, Poehler & Spivey aren’t the only Parks and Recreation alums to have gone on to enjoy a wonderful, impressive career. With a special reunion released last year, we wanted to share our beloved cast members’ new projects. Here are some other spectacular projects that have the magical touch of the members from its cast & crew.
The Good Place (2016)
Michael Schur – one of the creators of Parks and Recreation – has gone on to gift the world with a number of feelgood comedy projects including Brooklyn Nine-Nine. However, centering around the moral and philosophical quandaries of the afterlife with Ted Danson (Bored to Death) & Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), The Good Place is by far one of his finest.
Making It (2018 – )
Due for release this summer, Nick Offerman (The Founder) will join Poehler for this unscripted NBC reality show about craftmaking, sounding like it may be the perfect cosy viewing experience craved by hungover people everywhere.
Fargo (2014 – )
Offerman was a scene-stealing delight (even without his signature moustache) as drunken lawyer Karl Weathers in the second season of Fargo, opposite Patrick Wilson (Insidious) & Jesse Plemons (The Master).
Difficult People (2015 – 2017)
As well as featuring Poehler as an executive producer, this vastly underrated (and since cancelled) Hulu comedy from Julie Klausner also starred the supreme talents of Billy Eichner (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising). The actor quite memorably played caustic curmudgeon Craig Middlebrooks in 17 episodes of Parks and Recreation.
Broad City (2014 – )
Poehler is also an executive producer of Comedy Central’s New York-based comedy Broad City. The show created by and starring Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer (Rough Night) – also enjoyed Poehler’s directorial talents in the episode “The Last Supper”.
Big Little Lies (2018 – )
As embittered Ed Mackenzie in the HBO hit series, Adam Scott (Ghosted) showcases some serious acting chops. Did anyone ever think timid, nerdy Ben Wyatt would land in something opposite Nicole Kidman (The Beguiled) & Reese Witherspoon (A Wrinkle in Time)? The boy’s done good.
Legion (2017 – )
The trippy, audacious Marvel–FX series is one of the most inventive and strange on TV, making it the perfect home for the offbeat talents of Aubrey Plaza (who played acerbic office worker April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation.)
Ingrid Goes West (2017)
While we’re bigging up Plaza’s career, we’d be remiss to neglect her astounding performance in Matt Spicer’s social media satire, Ingrid Goes West.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Personally, we’d welcome cuddly and moronic Andy Dwyer-era Chris Pratt over the six-pack boasting Star Lord of Guardians of the Galaxy-era Pratt, but whatever. The actor is about to star in a goddamn Avengers movie, so what the hell do we know?
Logan Lucky (2017)
Better known for being the hapless office punchbag Jerry Gergich, Jim O’Heir has enjoyed an extremely diverse career since leaving Parks and Recreation. As well as playing Sheriff Reynolds in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and a recurring role in The Bold and the Beautiful, O’Heir also enjoyed a role in Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky.
Master of None (2015 – )
Aziz Ansari (30 Minutes or Less) is no longer all about that swag like the debt-ridden, aspiring entrepreneur Tom Haverford was – now he’s all about that sweet prestige TV. His Netflix series Master of None is beautifully written, packed with pathos, and stacked with cinematic references, making it truly bingeworthy.
Good Girls (2018 – )
NBC’s latest comedy series stars Christina Hendricks (The Neon Demon), Mae Whitman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), and Retta (To the Bone) as a pack of suburban women who basically live by Donna Meagle’s mantra of “treat yo’self”, as they become bank robbers in a bid to take control of their lives.
Black Mirror: “Nosedive” (2016)
Rashida Jones is reportedly working on a script for a potential 9 to 5 reboot starring Jane Fonda (Klute), Dolly Parton, and Lily Tomlin (Nashville). If you need further evidence of her impressive writing talents, look no further than her Bryce Dallas Howard-starring Black Mirror episode, “Nosedive”.
