Daniel Craig’s first outing as the legendary 007, ‘Casino Royale’ remains one of the best and the most iconic casino movies of all time. Although the entire Bond film is worth watching multiple times from start to finish, the best scene is the high stakes poker game between Craig’s Bond and Mads Mikkelsen’s Le Chiffre. Bond’s idea is to play against the terrorist financer and bankrupt him through high stakes poker. The situation is made tenser when the final round between the two ends with one of them walking out with $100 million.
Martin Scorsese’s mobster flick ‘Casino’, starring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci, follows the tumultuous lives of two friends who get embroiled in the mafia-run world of Vegas casinos. One of the best casino scenes is when Sam (De Niro) first meets Ginger, played by Stone. She’s a streetwise hustler and during the introduction, she’s doing her best to steal from the casino and cause a distraction. Sam falls in love with her as soon as he sees her, and their relationship arc forms a major part of the film’s storyline.
Casino scenes simply don’t get as iconic (or as memorable) as the Las Vegas scene in Barry Levinson’s 1988 film ‘Rain Man’. In the movie, Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is a self-absorbed, shallow man who finds himself deep in debt. When he finds out that his autistic older brother Ray (a fantastic Dustin Hoffman) is a mathematical genius, he takes him to Las Vegas so they can use Ray’s extraordinary card-counting abilities to win big in a casino. Suffice it to say that the casino scene in ‘Rain Man’ is pure artistry, on the parts of both the actors and the filmmaker.
A direct tribute to the ‘Rain Man’ scene mentioned above, Alan’s card counting scene in Todd Phillips’ hilarious film ‘The Hangover’ is one of the best scenes of the movie. Zach Galifianakis is super funny as the “weirdly whimsical and scatterbrained” Alan, who decides to count cards in a Blackjack game and ends up winning big. We wouldn’t be surprised if this scene makes you want to play some Blackjack yourself. Although the movie series didn’t pan out as planned originally, the first installment of the Percy Jackson series is still a pretty good watch as a standalone film. In ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’, Greek demigods Percy and Annabeth, along with their satyr friend Grover, find themselves under magical entrapment at the Lotus Casino in Las Vegas, halfway on their way to literal Hell. It’s a great scene fittingly set to the tune of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”, with the protagonists indulging in some awesome casino fun until they realise they’re trapped.
‘Austin Powers’ parodies the several similarly set scenes from spy films that it spoofs. In one of the best casino scenes of all time, Austin hits the blackjack table where Number 2 is cheating using his x-ray vision eye-patch. Powers coolly claims he likes to live dangerously too, just like Number 2, but it falls flat because he loses terribly the very next second. Subtle comedy at its best.
