Just because the main series of Adventure Time has ended after 10 seasons on Cartoon Network, it doesn’t mean that the series itself is quite over. There have been a variety of specials featuring your favorite characters over on HBO Max. Now, well, it looks like the streaming service is revisiting a very interesting bit of Adventure Time lore in an upcoming spinoff series: Fionna and Cake.

Who are Fionna and Cake?
If you spent a lot of time on the Internet, then you’ve heard of the phrase “Rule 63”. For those who don’t know what it means, then we’ll break it down for you. Basically, for every male character that exists, then there’s a female version of that character out there. It’s also known as “genderbending” when you change a character’s gender for the narrative. Like what if Finn was Fionna that’s the basic premise.
That’s the basic premise. Rather than being a boy & his dog of the original Adventure Time, we’re with a girl & her cat. Everyone’s sex has changed as well Princess Bubblegum is Prince Gumball, Marceline the Vampire Queen is now Marshall Lee. You’re getting the picture, right? Over the course of the ten season run of the series, Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake only happened a handful of times.
That didn’t stop the concept from being popular with fans. There were comics with the characters. There was fanart & cosplay. People really do genuinely love Fionna and Cake. Honestly? Rumors abound for years about a potential spinoff featuring the characters. Now, well, it looks like that time has officially arrived, hasn’t it? We’re thrilled, honestly.
The details of the Adventure Time spinoff
We all know who Fionna and Cake are, so let’s get into the details of the spinoff, shall we? The series will be 10 episodes long with each episode clocking in at half-and-hour long. Adventure Time vet Adam Muto will serve as the showrunner for the project as well as executive producer. Again, the series will head to HBO Max, which has been the home of the other Adventure Time specials.
According to Variety, the series follows “Fionna and Cake – with the help of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov – embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery. All the while, a powerful new antagonist determined to track them down and erase them from existence lurks in the shadows.” Okay, we’re interested to see where we’re heading in this story.
