Why Gong Yoo said ‘Guardian: The Lonely and Great God’ was his fave
Guardian: The Lonely and Great God did a number on our heartstrings. Korean drama star & leading man Gong Yoo agrees. On Nov. 19, Gong Yoo appeared on SBS’s YouTube show MMTG for an interview. During the interview with host Jaejae, Gong Yoo discussed the past characters he has played, including his role as Kim Shin on the famed Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.
Gong Yoo played a game to determine his fave role
During the episode, Jaejae asked Gong Yoo to play a game in which she asked him to pick his favorite character out of the roles he’s played. Two at a time, Jaejae brought out pictures of the characters. Gong Yoo was to pick between the two until he was left with only one. His role as Kim Shin in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God was among the roles he decided between.
Before speaking on his character in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, Gong Yoo picked between Choi Han Kyul in Coffee Prince and Gi Joon in Finding Mr. Destiny. He said, “Gi Joon is charming, but he can’t win against Choi Han Kyul.” He then picked between Kang In Ho in Silenced and Seok Woo in Train to Busan. He said, “This one’s a bit hard. I’ll go with Kang In Ho. But this doesn’t mean I’m throwing Seok Woo away.”
Picking between Kim Shin in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God and Jung Dae Hyun in Kim Ji Young, Born 1982, he said, “Kim Shin is too strong. I’ll go with him.”
In the final round, Gong Yoo had to pick between Choi Han Kyul & Kim Shin. He ended up picking his Guardian: The Lonely and Great God character and said, “I think that Kim Shin is the evolved and more mature form of Choi Han Kyul. Kim Shin is a character with a lot of pain. Among my characters, he’s the one with the most painful past.”
Gong Yoo also promoted his new movie
Gong Yoo is currently prepping for the premiere of his upcoming sci-fi film Seobok, co-starring Park Bo Gum. Seobok is a sci-fi film about a former intelligence agent named Ki Heon (played by Gong Yoo).
For the final mission of his life, Ki Heon is entrusted with the task of ensuring the safe transportation of humanity’s very first human clone. Gong Yoo does a fair share of protecting as Kim Shin in ‘Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.’ Looks like he’s not catching any breaks in his ‘Seobok’ role.
Park Bo Gum will star as the aforementioned clone, named Seobok, who is the target of many forces looking to steal the clone for themselves. The pair find themselves caught up in a series of unforeseen and dangerous situations throughout their exhilarating journey, as Ki Heon attempts to protect Seobok at all costs. It seems that this film might be just as sad as ‘Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.’
Promotional material
On Nov. 16, a new poster was released for the upcoming film, giving anticipating fans a look into the dynamic between its two leading protagonists. In the poster, Seobok, who has spent his whole life in the confines of a research lab, gazes sadly at the image of a boundless blue sea, lifting his hand to touch the screen in front of him. Meanwhile, Ki Heon sports a cryptic expression as he watches Seobok closely from his side.
The poster’s caption spotlights the weight of Ki Heon’s responsibility and hints at the limited time he has left, reading, “For the last time in my life, a being that I must protect has appeared.”
