Why is Nick Fury in space? Marvel’s ‘Secret Invasion’ will have the answers

The post-credit scene to 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home gave us a lot to think about. Most importantly: why exactly was Nick Fury in space?

Possibly because of an impending Secret Invasion . . . ? 

After the events of Avengers: Endgame, fans everywhere knew that things would never be the same in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as the victory against Thanos felt like an epic conclusion in this eleven-year MCU journey that took place over twenty-two films.

Now, after President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige’s release of an impressive slate of upcoming MCU films, announced at the Disney Investor Day earlier this month, it’s clear the MCU has no future plans of slowing down.

But without Thanos in the picture, who will be the future big baddie for the Avengers in phase four of the MCU, or even beyond phase four? 

Maybe Nick Fury knows something that we don’t . . . 

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Because of the amazing (no pun intended) Spider-Man: Far From Home reveal that saw the return of JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson in the first post-credit scene, many fans thought nothing of the second clip that was shown once the credits had finished rolling, which saw Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) on possibly the largest space carrier we’ve seen yet in the MCU, returning from his work break and barking orders to the crew. 

Throughout Spider-Man: Far From Home we were all led to believe that both Nick Fury & Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Fury’s partner & confidant, are on earth, assisting Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in his endeavors against the tricksy Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), when they were later revealed to be the Skrulls, Talos, and Soren from Captain Marvel. 

Skrulls are a shapeshifting alien race, who were clearly tasked by Fury to manage the events on earth on his behalf as he dealt with a possible new threat somewhere else in the galaxy. 

Secret Invasion

One of the many Disney+ projects teased at Disney Investor Day by Kevin Feige was a series called Secret Invasion, a possible nod at the beloved comic book story of the same name which saw the Skrulls take the form of many familiar and new Marvel superheroes. 

Fans also speculated the carrier in which Fury took refuge may actually belong to S.W.O.R.D, a secret organization whose purpose is defending threats from space, much like S.H.I.E.L.D’s purpose was on earth. 

While S.W.O.R.D. has not yet been introduced in the MCU, fans believe that this makes the most sense, as the MCU will need to soon begin teasing the next big threat that will span over the course of multiple phases, a threat that can only be stopped after twenty or more films of exposition & build up. 

Seems a bit excessive, we know, but it’s what made Infinity War & Endgame so satisfying.  

A possible future threat for the Avengers

Mysterio, a villain who nearly took out significant parts of Europe for crying out loud couldn’t even get the attention of the real Nick Fury, which leads us to believe that something, or someone, is indeed out there beyond Earth’s reach. 

But who? 

The game of “who’s going to replace Thanos?” has been played for years, even prior to Infinity War, as fans speculated on what other Marvel villains could pose as large a threat as the “Mad Titan”. 

With the Disney acquisition of Fox and its catalog of Marvel owned content, Kevin Feige certainly has a much larger sandbox to play in now. 

With that, many people thought that the character of Dr. Doom, an often foe to the Fantastic Four could be an option. Now, with news coming out that the Fantastic Four will be the first previously owned Fox property that will be brought into the MCU, those rumors seem more and more likely. 

However, because Nick Fury is out there in space, and not the earth, we have reason to guess that it could be Galactus, a once-mortal who’s now a cosmic entity that consumes planets. 

Fans have been begging Kevin Feige to bring in the character of Galactus for years into the MCU, and perhaps that’s just what Nick Fury is out in space for, to uncover the galaxy’s biggest threat yet.

Thanos only wanted to eliminate half the galaxy’s population . . . what if Galactus isn’t as forgiving?
