‘Captain Marvel 2’: Does the name change mean Ms. Marvel is coming?
Captain Marvel 2 is one movie that currently has the eyes of every MCU fan laser-focused. From the change of the film’s title to The Marvels to a talented director behind the camera, the long-awaited sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel has fans majorly psyched to see what’s in the pipeline. With that in mind, what does The Marvels mean as a title versus Captain Marvel 2?
Well, our best guess, based on the casting for The Marvels is that, of course, we’ll see Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) take a large role in the movie. In addition, we’ve already met Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) back in WandaVision where we saw her get her superpowers and be reached out to by the Skrulls for some sort of mission.
From Captain Marvel 2 to The Marvels
Bringing together, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Ms. Marvel naturally lends to the name change. It’s a team-up that fans have been waiting for to see in live-action ever since Captain Marvel was announced years ago. Ever since Kamala Khan appeared in comic books? MCU fans have been begging to see her in live-action because, well, Kamala is awesome and we love her.
In the comics, Monica Rambeau is a hero known as Photon. But in the MCU, it was revealed that Photon was her mother Maria’s (Lashana Lynch) nickname/callsign. Like how Carol Danvers, apparently, was known as the Avenger. Now, it’s possible that Monica could take up her mother’s name as a sort of tribute to her. In comics, however, Monica also took up the Captain Marvel moniker for herself.
Whether or not The Marvels will see Carol Danvers pass the title to Monica? That remains to be seen. Or, she could come up with her own Marvel based title for herself. But, there is precedent for something to happen here. Monica only just got her powers so she doesn’t really have a hero name quite yet. Of course, details for the film are being kept under wraps. Though production is set to begin in May 2021, this month.
Where does Ms. Marvel fit into all of this?
Ms. Marvel is, in some way, supposed to set up The Marvels. Obviously, we need to see the origin story for Kamala play out so that way it doesn’t get squeezed in with the film. The Disney+ series is one of the big projects that fans are really excited about. Ms. Marvel has finished filming, and is supposed to hit Disney+ in late 2021. That gives us enough time to get to The Marvels release date in Nov. 2022.
As for how Ms. Marvel, specifically, will fit into things? We can only guess. She is a young hero who has been inspired to act through her idolization of Carol Danvers. It puts her in an interesting spot between Carol & Monica. As a child, Monica Rambeau idolized Carol, much like Kamala, and, well, we’re guessing that Carol doesn’t know how to handle a superpowered teenager who modeled herself after her in some way.
From WandaVision, we know that something happened after the end of Captain Marvel to sour Monica on Carol in some way. We’re presuming that it has something to do with her mother’s cancer. Honestly? That’s just a guess on our part. We’re guessing that somehow Carol & Monica will come into conflict with Kamala in the middle, perhaps learning that her hero is a person who makes mistakes.
