The most anticipated movies and TV series you should watch in 2023
Anytime a new year rolls in, movie lovers begin discussing the productions they expect to see released. So far, 2023 hasn’t disappointed, with fans tuning in for new installments of popular franchises and fresh takes on some of the classics. So, what can you expect from the rest of the year? Which beloved characters should you tune in to watch in the following months? Here are some suggestions.
Barbie
The much-awaited fantasy comedy production is set to launch on July 21st in the US and United Kingdom. The plot is the first live-action Barbie film ever to be made, and the story is set to follow the beloved Mattel doll on a journey of emancipation and self-reflection in the real world. The star-studded cast features Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken.
Oppenheimer
The internet went into quite a craze that Oppenheimer, a biographical thriller, is scheduled to have the same release date as Barbie. The fun comes from the fact that the two movies have entirely different looks and atmospheres. Fans have taken to social media to poke fun at the situation and show the different styles they would wear at the premiere. The Christopher Nolan epic is based on “American Prometheus,” a 2005 biography of theoretical physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer, commonly known as the” father of the atomic bomb.”
The cast includes Cillian Murphy in the title role, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, and Robert Downey JR.
Gran Turismo
Another biographical film, Gran Turismo, is a coming-of-age drama that focuses on Jann Mardenborough, a teenager participating in video game competitions and looking to become an actual race car driver. Electronic sports have become increasingly popular over the past years, with esports bettings finding new engagement from the general public. So, if you’re interested in following the story of a gamer who becomes a racer and gets a shot at following his dreams in an unexpected way, this is the movie for you.
The US theatrical release is set for August 11th. The cast includes Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom, David Harbour and Djimon Hounsou.
Only Murders in the Building
The mystery comedy-drama was renewed for a third season, with the premiere on August 8th. The first season centered around the death of an Upper West Side resident, after which three neighbors began an investigation podcast. The second season features the same trio, this type, as suspects in the murder of another resident. The third season appears to focus on a murder that doesn’t take place in the same building. Meryl Streep will be featured in the third season, while Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short will reprise their roles.
Talk to Me
Summer is generally associated with lighthearted fun, but fans of the horror genre are in for a treat if they go see “Talk to Me.” The Australian production features Sophie Wilde as Mia and follows the story of a friend group who dabbles in the supernatural by using an embalmed hand to conjure spirits. As you might expect, things go askew, and frightening forces are unleashed. The movie is set to have a theatrical release on July 27th in Australia and a day later, on the 28th, in the United States.
Red, White & Royal Blue
Based on a romance novel published in 2019 by American author Casey McQuiston, the film adaptation of “Red, White & Royal Blue” is set for a release on August 11th. The movie will follow the story of Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the first female POTUS. Alongside his sister June, Alex attends a royal wedding, where he has to face the groom’s younger brother, Prince Henry, whom he has always despised. After an altercation forces them to pretend to be friends in order to avoid a scandal and diplomatic problems, the two manage to apologize to one another and become friends. Things become more complicated when the relationship turns into a secret romance.
Uma Thurman will play President Ellen Claremont, who seeks to be re-elected.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Animation fans can tune in on August 4th to watch the four Turtle brothers, Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael, emerge after years of being sheltered from the outside world. They hope to be accepted by New Yorkers by performing heroic acts, and the plan seems to yield results with the help of April O’Neil, their human friend and ally. But things become more complicated when they go up against a crime syndicate, and other mutants are sent to stop them.
Cobweb
This horror thriller production will be available in theaters on July 21st. The main character is a young boy who deals with a constant tapping sound that appears to originate from inside his bedroom walls. If you’ve watched enough horror films, you know nothing good ever comes from that. His parents are initially dismissive, but as supernatural threats materialize, the family must stay together to remain safe. But can they do it, and do they even want to?
They Cloned Tyrone
With a cast featuring John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, Kiefer Sutherland and Teyonah Parris, “They Cloned Tyrone” will have an exclusive premiere on Netflix on the 21st of July. Following the discovery of an eerie conspiracy theory involving, of course, cloning. The film blends realism and suspense with adventure and comedy, creating an eclectic mix that’s quite rare to establish in a movie without having it feel all over the place.
Good Omens
The fantasy comedy British series enjoyed a cult following after the first season’s release in 2019. The positive critical response had much to do with the performances of the show’s main duo, the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley, played by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, respectively. The second season will return on July 28th on Prime Video and will continue following the centuries-long friendship between the two. But there are also new challenges the beloved duo will have to navigate.
Dune: Part Two
The sequel to the 2021 movie, the second part of “Dune,” continues Paul Atreides’ journey on the desert planet of Arrakis. He seeks revenge against the conspirators responsible for his family’s downfall and his father’s death, all while getting ready for a future that’s still unknown and out of reach for anyone else. Denis Villeneuve’s epic will have an exclusive release in cinemas worldwide on November 3rd.
