Even with a good cast, who asked for ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ on The CW?
If you’re a millennial, then chances are you grew up all in with The Powerpuff Girls. From their killer theme song to the memorable cast of villains, it was a much-watch on Cartoon Network for years. Since its release, fans still remain deeply nostalgic about these crime-fighting kindergarteners. So when a live-action reboot of The Powerpuff Girls was announced? We were concerned.
To be fair, we still are concerned. Listen, we know being edgy with classic childhood series is the “in” thing right now, but can’t some things remain sacred? Must we make everything darker? Where has the joy gone? We know the state of the world, but c’mon guys. Do we really need disillusioned members of The PowerPuff Girls, who resent losing their childhood to crime-fighting?
That show exists and it’s called The Umbrella Academy, people. Anyway, we have casting news for our leads for the pilot.
Meet Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup
Chloe Bennet (Agents of SHIELD), Dove Cameron (Liv & Maddie), and Yara Perrault (Jagged Little Pill) make-up Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup respectively. Honestly? It pains us to say it because we’re really unsure about this concept, but the casting is pretty solid all around. Bennet’s turn as Skye/Daisy on Agents of SHIELD makes sense for the role of Blossom. The same can be said with Cameron’s Disney work and Bubbles.
Perrault as Buttercup in The Powerpuff Girls is definitely the newest face. This marks her first onscreen role. She’s a singer, but is better known for her work on Broadway. She was in the Alanis Morrisette musical, Jagged Little Pill. Perrault was set to join the cast of Hamilton, but then COVID happened. Remember going to see live theatre, everyone? We miss it.
The Powerpuff Girls also means a reunion for Bennet & Cameron, who appeared together on season five of ABC’s Agents of SHIELD. It’ll be interesting to see how everyone meshes together as these very different sisters.
Can a good cast save a series?
Most people are writing off The Powerpuff Girls live-action series before it ever airs. It’s one of those instances when the concept sounds a little too much for people. Also, look at the world, can we really continue with the dreary remakes of our favorite childhood series? Besides, making something darker doesn’t automatically make it good, look at Riverdale.
But, to answer the question, a good cast can help a series out. A solid cast, like in Supergirl or Lucifer, can smooth over a lot of sins from plotholes to weird tonal shifts. It’s also down to the material as well, of course. You can only use a good cast to hide the sins of a series for so long (Riverdale, Glee). It all comes down to execution in the end and what kind of series The Powerpuff Girls wants to be.
If people are having this violent of a reaction to the concept, then chances are it may not do well. Or people will only tune in to watch it crash & burn. After all, we all made Tiger King a viral sensation because we love watching a wreck in real time. Either way, even if the rest of the cast turns out to be as good as our three leads, there are no promises that the series itself will stand up over time.
Though, this is The CW and Dynasty keeps getting renewed, so who knows what’ll happen next?
